Asbestos Water Tank

I had a plumber working on my council house today, and he has phoned me to tell me that there is an asbestos water tank in the attic. He says it should be removed. He advised me to phone the cork city council straight away and inform them, which I did, however their attitude left a bit to be desired, the woman at my local depot took my name and number and told me she'd inform the foreman, who'd get back to me. Nothing in two hours so far anyway. I imagine it'll be another few phone calls back to them before i get anywhere with them

I have been living in the house since 1989, I imagine the place was built in the 60s, and no major plumbing work was carried out while I have been living there.

    Anyway, what I'm wondering is..

How dangerous is it, if at all?
Will the tank have to be removed and replaced?

Mods sorry if this is the wrong forum, seemed to me like the best place to put it, if not, apologies!

Thanks in advance for any replies

    Roar,

It is dangerous and needs to be changed.
You need to get professional and medical advice.

This is Cork Co.co's issue and you should feel no quams about screaming as loud as you have to to get this sorted, including getting on to your local concellors / TDs.

    Goodluck,

Lets all calm down and examine the facts.

Asbestos dust is cancerous - so drilling holes in the tank and breathing in the dust could be bad for your health. Have you been drilling lots of holes?

The tank would be best replaced and disposed of by an Asbestos Removal Contractor.

"Screaming as loud as you have too" might be a little bit of an over-reaction. You have inert asbestos not the plague.
You have lived with it for twenty years, afew more days isn't going to matter!

Why not google the health risks, so you'll be able to sleep soundly tonight.

As RKQ said Asbestos is generally only dangerous if its disturbed, its the dust thats carcenogenic not the actual material. Generally peoples reactions are way over the top when they find some in their house. It was a very common building material once so you probably arent the only one in your area affected.
Personally I think well find MDF to have the same problems in years to come.

It wont last long enough to be a problem..:P

Slig and RKQ have summed up what I was thinking on the asbestos issue above.

What was your plumber doing with the tank ?
