Opinions on 3 FTA Receivers

    Hi,

I'm a general gadget freak but I'm a newbie when it comes to satellite.

I walked into a shop here in Limerick looking for a full FTA system including install.

One package has a Laogao 7 Northstar receiver for €249. I can't find anything on this online. Any ideas?

The other was a package for €299 with a Strong SRT 6020.

I have a link to the receiver spec here:
    http://www.sat-receiver-world.com/producer/strong-digital/strong-srt-6020.html

Does this seem like a good receiver for FTA?

Also Satellite.ie have a package with what appears to be a Grundig GUFSAT01 for €299.

So, which would you guys most recommend?

    Thanks

    Hi,

I have a Strong 6355 and have installed a few other Strong models and they have all been good receivers.

The Gufsat receiver from satellite.ie will give you a full 7 day EPG unlike the other FTA boxes as it is a Freesat Receiver.

There are +'s and -'s to both, depending on what you want to do. If all you want are the main British channels (BBC1,2,3,4 ITV1,2,3,4, C4, More4, E4, Film4) and some music and movie channels, and want simplicity of use, I would go for the Gufsat. To see what you can get on Freesat, check out www.freesat.co.uk

From my initial investigation I would probably be edging towards the FreeSat Grundig one, the nice 7-day EPG seems good.

I probably am only interested in the FreeSat British channels really, I don't want foreign language channels.

Are there are more good English language channels that can be picked up FTA outside of the FreeSat ones that the Grundig would be capable of receiving?

There are some music channels and some news channels that are fta but not on freesat. I believe the gufsat can tune in FTA channels, but perhaps Tony from satellite.ie could fill you in better on that than I.

If all you want are the main channels, then yes, the gufsat is for you.

the grundig freesat box (SD) can be got in the north at argos for a reasonable £49 (€60). if you already have a dish pointed at 28east then your laughing. If its just FTA you want there are a lot of cheap recievers on the internet priced at around the same as the grundig, which will give you all the channels, plus the flexability of having what channels you want in what order you have them. The advantage of true freesat boxes are: They auto update, interactive text, 7 day epg.

The Silversrest Satellite kit is back in Lidl for €79.99 on monday pretty decent box, set a few boxes up for neighbours and friends, good value considering you get everything including the cable etc.

Have the Bush SD Freesat box myself, would be similar to the Grundig, having a 7 day EPG is a great advantage over the ordinary FTA
