    Hi

Looking at getting one of these - have a look.

Any views? I'm completely new to home recording but have been advised that this is a good start.

One (probably) silly question - can you just plug guitar or mic directly into this yoke or is that too simplistic?

    Thanks

I've used an E-MU interface in the past and I'm under the impression that they make pretty decent entry level stuff.

Yep, you just plug guitar and/or mic in and go.

ive triaed a few usb systems , and it aint great mate - im returning one to thomann as i speak - firewire is the way to go if you dont use ADAT

usb is just not good enough with more than two channells .

    Thanks guys.

DaDumTish - it is high speed USB if it makes a difference - what would you recommend instead and why firewire?

Generaly i would also recommend firewire over usb but i dont think you are going to have any problems with the reduced bandwidth of usb when we are only talking 2 track of audio.

Iv have used this unit before and had no problems with it. And yes the front inputs also function as a d.i so you can plug your guitar/bass directly in here. You may need to check the specs on impedence and the output of you pickups first though.

The only bummer about this unit is that it cant be bus powered which isnt a deal breaker but still a little pain in the ass.

I got an Apogee duet from Audio Warehouse in Raheny a few weeks ago. It's fire wire and is the business. I had an M-Audio fast track pro before that. It was a USB device. The difference in sound between the two was pretty amazing.

Only works with a Mac though afaik.

I was going to get the 0404 but actually ended up getting a 1212m PCI card and am finding it great as a back up while my main MOTU unit is out of action ( apart from lack of Headphone jack on the card )

Generally though I've had a string of problems with USB 2.0 devices.. I had an M-audio Audiophile USB 2.0 jobbie that I ended up giving away to an engineer friend in Finglas as it would crap out randomly.. that went back to Thomann 2x.. The MOTU MKII USB has been nothing but trouble & currently dealing with MOTU to see what the problem is..

So see Firewire as my only viable option in future or an internal card
