    Hi,

My brother recently started jogging and has really taken a liking to it. I asked him if he was looking for anything in particular for Xmas and he mentioned a waterproof high visibility top/jacket for running. I believe my sister will be getting this so I'm wondering if there's anything else I could get him for running?

    Thanks in advance,
    John

What kind of budget are you thinking about? You could go from books up to GPS devices - 15eur - 300eur.

    What's the budget?

A good pair of trainers will be around 100Euro, but you'd probably need to get the ones he specifically uses.

Depending on how new he is and his level, a pair of racing flats might be appropriate - lighter shoes used specifically for racing, probably around 60-80Euro. Ditto for spikes if he wants to do track or cross country.

A top of the right material e.g. Nike FitDry is much better than a t-shirt IMO, doesn't get soaked with sweat. A short sleeved top might be around 30Euro, long sleeved 50Euro. On that note, make sure you're sister gets a jacket made for running - ie breathable. Be careful if you go to typical sports shop and you ask for a jacket for running, chances are they'll give you a Man Utd. coat, great for sitting on the subs bench chewing gum, maybe not the best for running.

Considering this cold weather, how about running tights? About 30Euro I think.

If the budget is much lower, running socks - about 10Euro for a very good pair of blister block socks, or running gloves.

    Great suggestions by Racing Flat.

Unless he has lycra or running tights already I'd probably steer clear or run it by him first though. Some people refuse to wear running tights because they think they look ridiculous. Is he prone to wearing spandex in his spare time ;)

While I agree tights do look ridiculous they are the business for the present weather and can help prevent injury. A great pressie if he likes the feel of lycra on a cold evening. Don't we all

If he has an iPod Nano, you could get him a Nike+ kit. Around 30 euro from the Apple Store.

Thanks for the suggestions lads, really appreciated!

The budget is restricted to about €30 but can stretch a bit if I think it's right for him.

I'm absolutely positive that he won't wear tights, regardless of the benefits he could gain from them!

I reckon the heart rate monitor or Nike long sleeved top could do the job for him. Anyone know of a specialist store for running gear in Dublin?

    Thanks once again,
    John

order online from somewhere like wiggle or start fitness. They'll have a far better selection than any of the bricks and mortar stores in Dublin. Delivery from wiggle is only a couple of days so there is loads of time.

Hey might be worth dropping into Amphibian King, they've a pretty big store with all things running. They are in Bray, last time I was in they had loads of really good Running gear but it was just before the marathon I'm not sure if they always have such high stock levels.

    Dublin...
    Runways in parnell street.
Champion Sports in grafton street and arnotts also have specific running sections.

John Buckley in Cork also posts - you'll have it next day, has a website, his name.

You may have solved my Christmas gift issues... I'm tempted to sign each of my brothers up for the Dublin marathon :D . I wonder how it'd go down. I think the rest of the family could get a kick out of it.

socks, you can never have too many tech socks when you first start. Boring but practical.
