Ive uninstalled/reinstalled, repaired, tried every thing and still the "update manager database" is disabled and has been for at least a month. Is this caused by a virus or a computer fault or AVG fault and how do I fix it?

there was a problem with AVG8 a few weeks ago where an update killed the update process. There are 2 files you need to delete and restart your pc that will allow you to update properly again on reboot. Can remember what files you need to remove. its possible they arent removed by an uninstall. i think they are somewhere like c:\documents and settings\<user>\avg
Try uninstalling and removing any avg dirs left behind in c:\documents and settings before you reinstall or goolge it for the exact files to delete
