50D/40D some stuff

    Hi,

the 40D will be going to ISS and onto the UK for them to look at it and see whether it's reparable. The 17-85 that was on the camera does not appear to be functioning correctly either so it looks as though the lens is a goner too. I initially thought shutter failure, now I'm wondering about some electrical fault.

My hope is still that the camera can be repaired under warranty. If it can, however, I'm interested in getting a second body so that this will never happen again (because it won't if I have two cameras, only if I have one). Thing is, I don't see too many 40Ds for sale any more and I want the cameras to be identical for various reasons of my own. I seem to be only getting 900E odd body only prices for the 40D. This seems a bit high in my view seeing as the camera has been superceded.

Also, if the camera has to be replaced, I don't know if Canon will fire a 40D at me or a 50D. Because the 40D has a slightly higher fps and slightly higher burst rate in RAW (although, I don't usually use RAW for continuous shooting) I'm angling towards that. Does anyone know of a good spec by spec comparison of the two cameras? I know the 50D is 15MP and stuff but...

Actually it hasn't. I found this out too when I was considering upgrading. Apparently the 40D and 50D are 'sister' models, ie. the 50D wasn't intended to replce the 40D. So that's why 40D prices are still high. I was thinking the same in fairness until I found out..

You should be able to get a 40D for around €700, no problem. Mine cost me €620 after cashback, but thats reduced a bit now.

There was a second hand one on adverts for €575. Might still be available.

This site is handy for comparing prices. But it deals with UK shops. I think there is 60 sterling cash back on the camera at the moment too.

If it has to be replaced I would presume that they would give you a refurbished 40D.

You really just don't get the whole idea of their being correct channels of communication about such things do you?

I don't do it on a whim. I do it because unlike you I happen to have a deep interest in this place being constructive. Nikon vs Canon threads are common and divisive. I have been here a lot longer than you and have seen them descend into chaos on too many occasions.

You also know full well that the place for cribbing about moderation is Feedback or Helpdesk. Be my guest to go there. If you make another off- topic whinge about moderation on Photography in an unrelated thread like you just did now I will ban you permanently from the forum. This is a final warning.

To echo others, there have been a good few 40Ds around Adverts recently that have been really well priced imo. I sold mine 2 weeks ago for 650 body only. I would personally prefer a 40D over a 50D for yourself, considering what you shoot. Sorry to hear about your cam going bust:(

Yeah, I've seen it and it looks really nice.

But I really need to know what's going to happen with my own cam first. I basically want the cameras to be identical so that I don't favour one over the other. I sold the 350D about a month ago because I literally had not used it in 6 months.

If I had been using it the odd time, I'd never have sold it, and would have had a back up while I was away when the primary camera failed.

That's my logic anyway. Two identically specced cams so it doesn't matter which one I use.

    Well a 40D is a 40D is it not?

BTW I wouldn't bother with ISS and send it direct. Much more effective and cheaper. I have details if you want.

Camera is under warranty so I like to think that ISS will have to sort out the shipping once I get it to them...

The issue is what happens if they say it can't be repaired. CM reckons that the 40D is still widely available so if that's the way things are, happy days.

Need to look at a replacement lens though; am not liking the 17-85 IS any more. I know that it sounds icky but my preference is for the Sigma lenses, they are more robust than the Canon ones in my experience.

Fingers crossed for another off topic whinge from the animal lover!

Back on topic, don't dpreview do side by side spec reviews of cameras with similarities?

    Hi Calina,

sorry to hear about the camera. Hope your trip wasn't ruined by it.

FYI Conns have a 40D (body only) for sale for E699. Was in there last Saturday, it's got a box, don't know much more about the condition but it looked clean.
