I went to the Temple Spa in Westmeath with my mum for a weekend last year. It was divine and I can't wait for a return visit!

You should certainly demand a good deal. Spa breaks were always too expensive for starters.
Now, they should be more realistic. Powerscourt closed down in September.
I would recommend the Hodson Bay hotel Spa. I was there with some girlfriends last year and we really enjoyed it.
The hotel spent a fortune on their new Spa.
It was really good value too.
And Athlone is only 1.5 hours from Dublin, so it's not a million miles away.
I would bargin with them and whatever price they quote you, off 25% less.
Walk away if they refuse to bargin with you.
I was in Galway recently on business and had to stay two nights in an hotel. The first hotel refused to negotiate on their nightly rate, so I walked out.
The second hotel up the road were only prepared to cut me a 5% deal, I walked again.
The third hotel offered by 12% - I accepted. Part of the deal was that there would be no single room supplement.
I told them I would recommend them to business clients and family and friends.

I would recommend the Farnham Estate in Cavan... really fab hotel, beautiful spa area with an infinity pool... reasonably priced treatments too. www.farnhamestate.ie

recommend temple spa too. Its not your typical 'fancy' spa, but the treatments were brilliant, the food was really good and the staff were all lovely. Its a scenic location but Im not sure how nice it would be in the depths of winter. they do things like yoga, country walks etc during the day.

The spa in the G hotel in galway is really nice, but I wouldnt recommend staying in the hotel!

Kellys in Wexford is the biz - not cheap but the service is excellent - after a few hours it feels like home.
