Sky costs?

    Hello folks,

I have two questions if you don't mind.

First up, I've been a Sky Digital subscriber for the past few years. I have the basic Sky box for which I pay €21 per month and get all the standard channels such as RTE, BBC, Nat Geo, Discovery, Sky News, etc. I don't have or pay extra for music, children's or premium channels.

Now then, I was thinking of upgrading to Sky HD and whilst browsing the Sky Ireland site I came across all these 'pack' deals. Am I right in assuming that I have to pay extra for the likes of National Geographic, Sky News, GOLD and so on if I upgrade, which at the moment I am simply paying a flat rate for?

I know its only something like €2 per pack but if I don't chose these packs what will I receive instead? Free to air terrestrial stuff like RTE, BBC and E4 only?

As for my second question, just exactly how much for a HD package? I'd like to retain all the channels I already have and get the Sports one. I've tried speaking to a Sky rep but most of them are Scottish and I haven't a bloody clue what they were saying.

    Thanks.

As I understand it, and until someone more qualified comes along to clarify...

A Sky HD sub costs an extra €15/month (plus install/equipment costs). With that, you get the HD version of any channels you currently have in your sub. So if you have a Sky Sports sub, you get Sky Sports HD; if not, then you don't. Given that Sky One is available on all subs, you should get Sky One HD.

So the rule of thumb is, if you get the SD variant of a given channel, and there is a HD variant, you'll get the HD variant when you pay for the HD sub.

You want to have the €21 sub and have HD and Sports - Sports 1 or 2 on their own are €21 each. So if it's just Sports 1 OR 2, your sub will be 21 + 15 + 21 = €57

    If it's Sports 1 & 2 with Sports 3 and X-tra free it will be 21 + 15 + 32 = €68 ( Sports 1 & 2 together = €32 )

    I hope this helps :)

Bloody hell, I didn't realise they were swindling money out of customers for each Sports channel.

    Anyway, thanks for the figures.

I am currently paying for the 3 main sky sports channels and sky sports extra (which i never use ).
I only really watch the premiership games on it , and i am right in saying they are always on sky sports 1 now.
So i could save myself a good few quid by ringing up and ditching sky sports 2 , sky sports 3 and sky sports extra ?
Am i reading that right ?

By the way i am getting sky + installed on monday next so now could be an ideal time to ring the sky customer service and start trimming down to the channels i want ?

Thanks a lot for any pointers
