This is to stop the other thread going off topic plus is an interesting debate?

What do people think? I seen the comments about the gooch being an underage star all the way through and Sean Cavangh was mentioned aswell but i doubt its neccesarily always the case. Ricey McMenamin never made a Tyrone team until the senior level!

Yeah, McMenamin was the one I was thinking about that was a late bloomer.

At the moment, there's a lot of potential in Dublin hurling but whether or not that potential is realised remains to be seen. In Dublin football, Diarmuid Connolly has got enormous potential imo. The only thing that'll stop him from being a top class intercounty forward is himself. He's also one of the best young hurlers in Dublin. Hopefully Mickey Whelan and Pat Gilroy will be able to get the best out of him.

Tom O'Sullivan never played minor for Kerry, and at one stage Kieran Donaghy could barely make the Austin Stacks minor side let alone the Kerry team!

Aidan O'Mahony also didn't make the underage teams as far as I know now that I think of it....

Seamus Callinan, Tipperary centre forward couldnt make the minor team and Liam Sheedy was manager of the minor team then and the manager of the senior team when he got he's chance so definitely a late developer

Can't remember McGarrity making any underage Mayo sides.

Tom Cunniffe only took up playing football around Under 14 level and could only make the Castlebar B' team as far as I know at U16 level.

Think Peadar Gardiner came into the senior ranks on the back of club success.

These comments were about a poster saying that an U10 was going to definitely make it. The discussion wasn't so much about a guy missing out on U21 and then making senior, it was about whether or not you can say a juvenile is definitely going to make it - which I think, imho, you can't. You can't judge if a 10-year-old will make it for a whole variety of reasons. You can reckon they've a good chance IF a lot of stuff goes right...but there's a lot of IFs...
