She's a TDDI I believe, the 115bhp engine. Just happened the other night and now it's a fairly regular occurance, as soon as engine hits around 3000rpm the Glow Plug/Engine Management light comes on and the engine dies. Starts back up fine but still happens again within minutes.

Just like to prep myself with some education before hitting the mechanic, could this be a fuel pump issue or something common to the Ford Diesels?

Does any black smoke plume out the exhaust.

I had a problem with an electric fuel pump under the right rear wheel, but that was due to a dodgy mechanic putting a crack in the pipes to the diesel filter.

TDDi were 90bhp for base model 2.0 TDDi. Never gave trouble over 100000 miles.

TDCi last generation was 115bhp for base model 2.0TDci. Lots of injector problems. 4 in total over 90000miles.

TDci current generation base is 100bhp in LX and 125bhp in Zetec 1.8TDci. No problems so far on 52000kms.

I had a TDci last generation that cut out just like that and would start and continue on for another while before it gave up. Turned out to be 2 blocked injectors. I used to feel a very slight "cough" every so often before it finally cut as I passed two artics on the M1 and had to sqeeze between them to get to hard shoulder prompting lots of horns from truck driver.

If it is injectors you will be offered new replacememts or reconditioned for half the price. Neither come with any guarentee so get the re-conditioned ones.

    Good luck

it could be many things really. the flashing glow plug indicates a fault logged on the ECU

could be the injectors (damage or might need recoding), blocked fuel filter, pump or several other things

if its persistent you will have to bring it to get diagnostics to find the fault.

i regualrly use a good injector cleaner like redex in mine to keep the injectors runing properly and have had no issues yet at 70,000 miles

It's a '02 Zetec AFAIK, 104k on the clock. I give it the Redex treatment fairly regularly but sounds like it's something fuel related alright.

It's not exactly drive-able in the interim though, i'd be a sitting duck if it went at motorway speed...

i used to have an 02 zetec which was a TDDi, and actually had it until exactly 104k miles. i changed the fuel filter around 95K and it was pretty filthy.

could be that reducing your fuel supply, but im only guessing.

Could be a Cam sensor. Does the engine actually die out, or do you go into limp mode?. If it was injectors...when ud start up, it would be spluttering like mad and smoking out the back...was the fuel filter ever changed?

Don't think its limp mode, engine dies and takes the steering and braking with it. No starting problems whatsoever, no smoke, so otherwise running fine.

I'm getting it looked at in next few days so will report back the findings for any other mondeo owners.

Hi Savman, Im brand new to this site.....have been looking through threads to find others with a similar fault to my own and it sounds like you have the same prob as I do. My 51 plate 2.0 tddi is currently in the garage beeing looked at and a lot of head scratching going on by all involved. did you manage to resolve these symptoms. I have the great fear it is going to be a very expensive repair. if you could advise me of your findings I would be grateful.

    Regards

Well...the exact wording of the invoice/report was "Removed inlet manifold and find wires at fuel pump damaged. Repaired wiring and refit removed items. Roadtested ok"

Problem hasn't resurfaced. Think I got off lightly, only around €180 for labour. It was in an official Ford dealer for a few days. HTH?

Thanks for the update...glad yours is sorted, hope that's all mine turns out to be..£180 I could live with...fingers crossed !!

    Thanks again,

    John

Having similar problems in an 03 mondeo.

Failed nct on emissions, got a new cat from ford then a few weeks later started to break down, symptons seem to be on a warm day after about 5 hours driving, the power seems to go and spluttering, if you leave it cool down for an hour or so goes ok again.

went back to ford they said it was an inlet manifold problem, got that in two weeks ago, was going fine until today when it went again, this time with an engine management light, aa guy said it was lambada bank 1.

Speaking to a guy tonight who had a similar problem reckons the engine is worn out and lambada etc are symptons of a bigger problem and in short you are only chasing after your tail paying for these parts, reckons the best solution is to recondtion the engine, seemingly some crowd do it on the north road.

any help would be welcome, over 100miles on it.
