anyone know places in the munster region that do rally conversions? ( or elsewhere?)

    I have a mk6 Escort - ( my 1 tonne baby)

I don't want to race it but the suspenson needs a total overhaul - so I wouldn't mind putting in something that will last forvever at normal speeds

The rally suspension would cost a mint, would that not be a waste considering your not actually going to rally it ? Why not look for a good road set or cheap race set ?

    where you based?
it'll be pretty espensive, and the suspension will be VERY hard if you go full race/rally spec, but, if you want to do it, then do, if it'll make you happy then why not. it's your car after all.

LEDA or GAZ should do coilovers for that car anyway.

As for rally prep places, there's lots, like West limerick rally spares inkilcornan co. limerick,
or i know of a good guy in cork who'll do pretty much anything fabrication/conversio-wise, and most stuff as regards fitting suspension, axles etc

First, putting race suspension in a road car will make it undriveable. Race suspensions typically have 10 to 20mm of suspension travel, with spring rates of 300lb plus (typical car would have approx 4" of travel, with 100 to 150lb springs). What you would end up with would be a car that would bounce and skip on the roads as our roads are not smooth. It would be almost impossible to drive.

Rally suspension also would make the car uncomfortable and very difficult to drive at normal speeds (ie road legal speeds)

Second, Mk6 escorts were never popular in rallying here, so parts would be hard to get, and maybe have to be custom made.

Third, Cost. A full rally (I'm ignoring race spec stuff as that's daft on a road car) would cost more thn the car's worth, with costs from 2K to 25K, depending on quality.

So, if you want to upgrade, there are two options. On the cheap, is put in diesel springs and shocks (diesel engines are heavier, and the springs and shocks are heavier duty), which isn't a problem for insurance (after all, they are OEM parts, and probably the standard OEM "heavy duty" stuff - Ford were good for that)

The other option is, as Asphalt says, the GAZ or Leda route. Gaz would make them to your spec as well. Spax also makes adjustable shocks as direct replacement. However, to get the best from these, install polybushes and make sure that there is no wear in the ball joints. However, then the car is modified, and you run into insurance problems.

Personally, I'd fit new OEM spec stuff from the local motor factors. It's the cheapest and with normal driving, will last for 8 to 10 years
