Was just wondering if anyone knows if 'Bushes being worn' is a regular reason for test failure.

    Car is a bmw 320D

    Any views would be great.

More common on BM's I've found. Get out the KJ jelly for the invoice for this job...

Front wishbone bushings worn? Very common 3 series problem I'm afraid...

Is this really an expensive thing to get done? I have one gone also in the front of my 3 series Ive looked on the net and the part appears to be quite inexpensive and my mechanic wont be charging too much to fit it.

Yeah as was mentioned above its very common in the e46 3 series due to the pressure put on the bushings when braking because of the weight of the car.

Last time i checked it was €100 for the two bushes from BMW.You will get good ones for a good bit less from GSF or OTTO.
Your looking at about an hour labour each side, probably a little bit more including pressing the old bush off the arm.
Also yes it is very common on BMW.

Eur 180 supplied and fitted down here, for the 2.

Yup, my 7 failed in August, rear bushings were worn which induced a lot of play in the rear wheels. €370 for two new control arms with no VAT from an Indy, so expect to pay about that for a 3 series at a dealer. Looking back, I wish i'd done it myself, looks handy enough.

I think this is a two wheel job, if one side is replaced, the other gets done aswell.

You'll need to know which bushes they say are worn, as there's ones on the front and the back!

Lower Control arm bushes are on the front, at the back of the wishbone.

Trailing arm bushes, are press fitted into the rear trailing arm.

Bushes are fairly cheap, it will the fitting that will cost... if the RTAB are changed probably best to get a 4 wheel alignment!

Thanks, Although im sure I would be told this when I go into my local mechanic. I know one is gone as it was flagged when I serviced the car at a specialist in London before moving home but no way was I letting them near it when I know for sure I can get it done a hell of a lot cheaper here.

Take a look at that link if you want to have an idea of what your mechanic will do. Thats a 2000 7 Series, however all BMW saloons are very similar.

As you can see it's not that hard to replace a control arm with worn bushings, its just about having the time and will.
