Ok, would be great if someone could sort out this trouble for me, and hopefully in the easiest possible way before, if I must, spend lts of money in a shop. Also need it sorted ASAP cos all my college notes are on it.

Basically, when the laptop starts up, the grey screen shows up, saying 'Windows failed to start up successfully'. So I choose last good configuration, and it begins to load up. Then the dreaded blue screen appears, saying Windows has beenshut down to prevent further damage.

So in UCD today, the IT guy says its some hard-drive problem that they couldn't fix, so I went about the Dell website myself to atmpt to fix it. Followed all relevant instructions, even up to a stage where I was doing stuff that I sisnt know computers could do. Got to a stage where I was checking Diagnostics on it, and the error code came up as 1000-0142. But can't return to that Diagnostics thing.

So there any way of sorting this, or am I better off going to a shop and getting them to fix it up for me?

BTW, laptop is Dell Inspiron 1501, XP Media Edition.

Cheers for any possible help, although think I've gone as far as I can myself.

Hold On - don't jump to conclusions just yet. It's very possible that it's just down to some bad sectors on the disk I got this problem (1000-0142) on a Dell a year ago and by running windows repair and a disk scan, it got cleaned up and the machine has ran fine ever since.

I did do a backup at the time though just in case....
