Hello. I need to do a quick report on how to do a Finite Element Analysis for a simple bracket. Its for college so I have a copy of AnsysEd 5.2. I have my simple drawing done up im Microstation but I cant get the files to open up in ansys. I have tried .igs and .dxf files.
Does anyone know what file type I need? The lecturer I have isnt very helpful, e just said to try them all as he didnt know himself.
    Thanks

.IGES should do it for you. It does with Inventor and Solidworks any ways.

One of the basic Ansys structural tutorials goes through the analysis of a bracket from model creation to results viewing, not sure if this is included in v5.2 though. You could probably just adapt this for your needs.

Most standard file formats should work, though if the design is simple it might be just as quick to recreate the model in Ansys.

I think part of your problem is Ansys V5.2 may not be compatible with the more modern CAD programmes. What level is your course and where are you studying (DCU perhaps)? Generally at undergrad and even postgrad they will not be asking you to do 3D modeling but simplify do a 2D analysis "with thickness" or an axi symmetric models. Alot of what FEA is about is breaking down the problem to a simpler representative model. I would use the university of alberta site (http://www.mece.ualberta.ca/Tutorials/ansys/) to practice and you may pick up the info you need.
