"Nationwide Special: Irish Soldiers In The British Army"

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/1201/nationwide_av.html?2456869,null,228

Good show for anyone who is interested. Those that don't like Irish men serving in another military, don't bother watching - you'll save yourself some stress.

It was very good and also good to see Paddy Shields making major. Met him and the wife in Lourdes this year.

Mad the numbers there because the Irish army were not recruiting at a particular time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,533 ✭✭✭iceage

And it seems to be happening again...recruitment from Irish applicants to the BA at approx. 14% at the moment.

Agreed, a very good show and a fair account by the guys themselves.

    That was a good show.

If anyone hears about them doing the same for the US Army, send 'em my way!

Nothing sinister or underhand implied Boss, just trying to reassure Mairt that there would be no shinanigans or chest beating going on.

I'm too cool to watch Nationwide :D

I watched it all and I could'nt believe how lazy Tommy Gorman was!
It was as if he was just reading a British army leaflet out!
The lads themselves did themselves no favours. They were barely able to
    string a sentence together!
Alright they are mercenarys and are basically being paid to follow orders in the same way the SS were during WW2 but still I would have liked to hear a tiny bit of political awareness.

^ I was wondering when the first one was going to show up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,739 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

It did show a fair view of the BA, it was only slightly advertisementy. The lads, in my opinion, spoke ablut as eloquently as anyone could have given they were most likely a little camera shy.

One of the Dubs even told the people that he never told many people what he was doing with himself. He just said he was working in England to anyone he met.

Good show, there is no need to rag on it. You don't agree then that what it is about is a good thing just don't speak. This has the ability to be a good thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

Yeah, little camera shy, but more or less what any soldier anywhere sounds like when there's a spotlight on him, to be honest.

Paul - please read the other threads on this topic before posting again. I don't want to have to go through the same rigmarole again.

I thought the Major seemed like a man you would want to go for a pint with! It's clear he loved his job and didnt mind the craics! The story about the Rosary beads was priceless!

    *Gets up on barstool*

I watched it all and I could'nt couldn't believe how lazy Paul Smith was.
It was as if he was just reading a republican propaganda leaflet out.
This lad done himself no favours, he was barely able to type a coherent sentence together without errors in the age of web browsers with inbuilt spell checkers!
All right they are mercenarys err spelling, mercenaries and are basically being paid to follow orders in the same way the SS were during WW2 and I am too lazy to read the thread about mercenaries to see what conclusions were reached over the definition of what a mercenary is

    but

but still I would have liked to hear a tiny bit of political awareness
but I still would have liked to see a tiny bit of intellectual capacity in the course of debate before resorting to Godwin's Law.

Yep, I used to be a soldier hence the spelling mistakes!

Perhaps Neillad while you are feeling smug about correcting me you might spare a thought for over 600,000 people killed in Iraq by...well some of 'da
brave lad's who do be just doing dere job.

May I please get a source off of you for this figure.

You must remember though, alot of the civilians killed in Iraq since the start of the war would have been killed by suicide bombers. While I am not sure how I feel about the war, I know I support the soldiers fighting it.

You say you used to be a soldier? What "Army"? Was it by any chance an illegal "Army"? I am sorry if it sounds accusatory, I am just asking.

If it was a legal Army, such as Oglaigh na hEireann, then you too would have been paid to follow orders, so that point raised in a previous post is null and void, I realise the lads are in a different Army, that of the British Empire, but they are doing a job.

Do you work? Do you get paid to work? Would you do your job for free? No? Well same as these lads, A good few of them just wanted to soldier, and as was mentioned the Irish Army were not recruiting at the time, so they went to our nearest Neighbour. They are doing a job they enjoy, Do you enjoy your job?

If you want to debate whether they are Mercenaries, you are more than Welcome in the thread that already exists, you will not sway my opinion, however, you may be able to voice your opinion and be heard in a relevant context.

Hagar, I am sorry if I strayed slightly, however I think I may have stayed just within acceptable boundaries, Snip if needs be, but, I believe my points are valid.

PS; Paul Smith, Boards has a 10,000 character post limit, could you please spell your words correctly, I am not a fan of rereading posts. Thanks.

Hi, The figure I used was from the 'Lancet' magazine.Of course it could be way off but what figure is acceptable? 300,000?

Yes,I work but there are limits to what I will do for money!

Was'nt the excuse given by the German soldiers when asked why they gassed so many Jews that they were just obeying orders?

I was briefly [as a naive 18 year old] in the Irish army so I am not coming at this from a Republican perspective.

They item did deserve to be on 'Nationwide' but for thirty minutes?
10 minutes of button shining and a hilarious story about a kettle with holes in it! Like all military 'humour' Not funny.

    Steady lads...Steady.

Is it required form for all conversations about said subject, to decend into complete chaos? Come on lads we promised Mairt.

I realise this, but now we have what are called Illegal orders, lads know they are gonna be held accountable for their own actions. If there is time to be given a direct order to do something, lets say, kill a POW. That means there is time to analyse the consequences. No man should recieve or give that order, but, now every man should know they are not to do it!

For context, are you now anti-military, or anti-British army?

As probably the only person on this board actually joining the BA I thought it was a nice docu. Wouldn't have mind if it was much longer but it's always good to see their side of the story!

Nothing smug about it, you held out your hand to be slapped - and had it slapped.
