Does the sound from earphones deteriorate over time?

I started using my Sony earphones (in-ear type) again after a period of them lying around. Seems to me the sound is not as impressive as it was when I first got them.

Does the sound just get worse over time?

The sound shouldn't deteriorate over time but I would imagine that would depend on the quality of said earphones. Are they relatively cheap Sony earphones you have?

You can spend literally hundreds on earphones, the more you spend the longer they last, the better the sound quality. :)

dust, earwax condensation can all cause the driver to get contaminated and not work as efficiently as before.

they could also just not be as good as you thought they were in the first case.

Yeah maybe my standards have just gone up since buying them. Anyway, I've ordered a pair of Senheisser CX300s so I'll compare then.

To answer the initial question, yes earphones do deteriorate over time. Yours are a relatively inexpensive set of earphones so I would imagine you could notice a slight deterioration after a year of heavy use, but you should still get mostly the same SQ from them for a good 3-4 years.
