Right resolution and refresh rate from GFX card

I have a Philips 32" LCD with resolution 1366x768p. My Media centre is running Vista and I have an Nvidia 8500GT. They are connected my a dvi to hdmi cable.

Using the nvidia control panel, I have tried pretty much every option of resolutions and refresh rate to see which looks best. If I pick a refresh of 50Hz, the picture is vibrant and looks well but this is only available on a handful of resolutions with 1280x720 being the best of these for viewing text.

What I would like is to output resolution 1366x768@50Hz but there is no option for 50Hz at this res, only 60Hz. So when I select 60hz, the screen size is perfect but the picture is very dim. (Whys that?)

I have tried installing Powerstrip but that only gives me the same options as the Nvidia control panel.

If its not possible to get my desired settings, I'd consider buying a new gfx card and have looked at the one mentioned in http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055417869. But how do I know if this card can allow me to select these settings either. I looked at the ati site and asus too but all I could find was "max" resolutions.

    So is there
    1) a way to get my nvidia card to output 1366x768@50Hz?
    2) a spec which shows a card that will give me this? The card must have dvi/hdmi and composite/svideo (running dual display with this output being 720x576@25Hz), and be silent.

    Thanks

Got a bit further with this. I didn't notice before, but custom resolutions can be set in nvidia control panel so I could get 1360x768@50Hz.

I also read my TV manual and for 720p, the TV recognises it as HD and alters the picture to make it brighter, hence why I was seeing the better picture at 720p.

Now I have a different problem. I tried 720p and 1360x768 at both 50 and 60 Hz to see what the picture was like and left the TV on sky news to see the ticker tape. Using the tape I could gauage the smoothness from frame to frame.

Anyway, 720p@50Hz did the best job but stuttered slightly ever half of a second. 60Hz and 1360x768 stuttered constantly.

Am I to just except the slight stutter and to be honest there is artifacts and graininess also no matter what, or is there anything else I can try. Btw, I tried nvidia, intervideo and ffwdshow mpeg2 decoders and there wasn't any improvement on the MS decoder.
