Singstar/PS2 - good idea for kids?

Ok, so I'm very attached to my ps3 for gaming, blu rays etc. However, my 8 year old wants singstar for christmas. Now, I have a choice of allowing her to use my ps3 or else buying a ps2 for her.

Now I know the advantage of using the ps3 is that you can download new songs over the internet. But I'd prefer to get her a ps2 that she can play away with and thus I'd keep sole access rights to my ps3 (a Daddy's love only goes so far :D)

Does anyone know of a good bundle deal on a ps2, that possibly includes singstar and the mics? I saw one in Smyths yesterday at €139.99. Now I would have thought that this would be cheaper as the ps2 is fairly old tech at this stage. I've checked ebay and they are also costing in the region of €140 when postage is included.

We want a new one as its christmas and so a traded in console isn't an option.

Finally, is singstar any good as I know nothing about it and with my singing voice, I won't be allowed near it!!

Yeah and when she gets all pop divaish and starts twirling round and yanks the mic's cord out of the usb slot and damages my ps3, then I can cite you in the court case for battering a child????:D

Now ask yourself, would you let an 8 year old near your ps3?????:P

You don't have to worry about the USB slot man... The mics are wireless on the ps3!!

But i still would be afraid to share my ps3 hehe:pac:

The microphones are NOT wireless on the PS3...not with the Singstar Vol.1 I got in any case.

OP, my opinion would be that you should get the PS2 and Singstar as there are alot more versions available for PS2 and they are at least €10 cheaper per disc.

Unless you have an early 60Gb PS3 remember it wont have PS2 backwards compatibility.

Also consider the Sing It range as they have Disney, Camp Rock & HSM versions which would be more 8 year old friendly.

Lastly, I may be mad, but I let my 6 year old loose on my PS3....just not with microphones.

So cheapest place to pick up the mics? I take it all of the mic sets come with the adaptor and can be used on the PS3.
I'm gonna leave them work away on my old PS2, to worried about my 60gig PS3 Laser giving up the ghost!

I checked all the usual suspects in town and the Smyths deal of €139.99 was the cheapest. Sorry I sold my old ps2 now:o

I have the original 60gb ps3 so it would be backwards compatible with ps2 singstar games. I'm not as rich as Snowboy above so I can't afford 2 ps3's for the house.

BTW the mics are not wireless if anyones interested. If they were, then I wouldn't mind her using the ps3 under strict supervision of course.

I read in a different post that singstar range for the ps2 will play on all the newer ps3's, aldo they are not backward compatible!, so I wonder if the ps2 mic set will work on the ps3?
    Anybody tried this?

You need an adapter to get the mics working on the PS3 since it only has USB inputs.

Yeah, the ps2 mics plug into a box which connects to the ps by a usb cable, so i'm guessing it will work.

All singstar games are compatible on all ps3's. Something to do with it not using the emotion engine possibly?

You don't need a separate adaptor. The Singstar mics for both Playstation models (PS2 & PS3) come with a USB-to-2 mic adapter.

Mics are the same and compatible with all Playstations although there is a possibility that some PS2 titles won't work with newer PS3's
