A Protea by any other name is..well... a Springbok?

SARFU have confirmed that the Springbok is to be removed from The SA shirt and replaced by the Protea, they will however still be called the Boks. Pretty daft, imo. Almost like taking the silver fern from the AB's... Going to order me an SA shirt today so I'll have the Bok on there...Politically Correct madness that robs the game of rugby of one of its most potent and evocative emblems.

    Anyone else any thoughts?

It's a bit sad but at teh end of the day, the Swastika was one of the most evocative images of the 20th century. (I think I just Godwin'd this thread majorly) Clearly a lot of people find the Bok emblem a symbol of white oppression, so sad as it is to see it go, I think it's understandable.

It's pointless really, they'll always be referred to as the Springboks/boks

TBH, if its good enough for Nelson Mandela its good enough for me:

    SARFU is FUBAR.

Why does the SA government insist on tampering with SARFU? Is it because it is a predominantly white sport there, despite the efforts of the Union?

They don't meddle with soccer like this. Where are the minimum quotas for whites on the national soccer team.

    PC gone mad (in reverse).

I agree, It's far too PC for me. Then again, we can't exactly say that we aren't PC in the IRFU either, now can we.

Whats blacks quota do we have to meet for the 6nations?

It won't totally be removed. The Springbok badge has shifted to the right-hand side of the national jersey with the King Protea on the left.

Hey, I don't take offence to it myself, but plenty of South Africans do, and for fairly obvious reasons. That's a country with a lot of problems, it's a pity, but such things have to be done. The sport remains a bastion of whiteness, and will always be under attack for that very reason.

Not entirely true tbh. Everywhere you go you will find blacks and coloureds joining the support of the rugby team. Heck, 4 of our backline players are coloured and deservedly so. It's mostly a few government officials that makes a big boohai over this. Either way, the change won't affect how the boks play in future.

Yeah I know. But there's also a major difference between coloured and black. Improvements are being made, but the Luke Watson fiasco is indicative of some still quite strong divisions in the game.

Luke Watson is a wannabe rugby star. He is average and a lot of people including coloureds and blacks who is not racist or biased thinks he is a moron.

I think the big thing is that the boks now have a coloured coach and as long as he is in charge and selecting a lot of coloureds/blacks SARFU won't interfere.

Luke Watson's not that bad. ;) And neither was his dad.

As for the current coach, he's shít so I doubt he'll be in the job for too long.

Not that bad but not that great ;) If you think of players better than him at the moment: Schalk Burger, Wickus van Heerden, Juan Smith, Pedrie Wannenburg, Cobus Grobbelaar.

PDV might not be a great coach or media person at the moment but he is some great players that will carry him through the rough times.

True, South Africa produces a decent whack of backrow forwards. ^^

Eh, I don't know if I'm honest, he strikes me as the kind of guy whose players will take him too far, until his limitations cost them bad. I can see at least one awful tour or maybe even a bad World Cup under him.

Yea, if I have too choose between the Lions or the WC11 I'd choose neither - fingers crossed it does not come to that.
