Hotel Management - why oh why?!?!

    Hi folks,

Well I'm in a bit of a dilemma at the moment. Last year I had Hotel Management on my CAO as my first preference - had visited the college, asked my questions, spoken to a previous graduate, the lot! Was fully set on it as my future job and then, my parents encouraged me to change my mind. "Go for a computer degree, your excellent at that sort of stuff" - and so I foolishly went with their view.

Now here I am, 4 months into my degree in Computer Networks & Systems Management and the thoughts of doing it for another 3 and a half years doesnt sit well with me.

What I would like to know is, if there is anyone out there that is a hotel manager, or heading for that route? Would you recommend it? Im aware of the high levels of hard work, long hours etc, but I'm the type that would love the long hours and sense of responsiblity.

Thanks a million for reading my post, and I look forward to yere replies

    - A DESPERATE college student.

All respect to you if you want to pursue it.
And you know about the long hours, low pay when starting and hassle with staff and residents.
I get stressed just thinking about it

Ever hear of CERT? Similar to FAS but they do courses in hotel industry. Possibly you can do summer courses and pursue your computing degree.
I did such a course years ago and they're a very good organization. I see you're in Limerick, the CERT centre was in Roxboro in Limerick city....next door to St. Marys Park:eek:

But......I've my doubts if they even exist anymore, can't seem to find a website or info from a google search.

Sorry to hear your not happy with the computer degree. It looks like you did your reasearch on the hotel management course and it looks lke you know what you would be getting into.

My advice, don't complete a degree your not into, you will only be miserable later on in life. Talk to the college again that were offering the hotel management course and find out the quickest way to get enrolled.

Best of luck, from someone who made the mistake of doing the wrong thing and had to go back later to do the thing I wanted. Happy now though!:)

I was in a similar situation, in that all i ever wanted to be was a chef. I loved everything about it. I decided to go to Cathal Brugha street and get a degree in management rather than doing the 2 year course as a chef. I was given the "loads of jobs teaching, do you really want that life for yourself" chat loads of times.

Catering / service industry is a job that's fulfilling only if you a deep love for your job. I have never been unhappy in any job since i was qualified. I know in my heart i would have made a miserable teacher. I'm ten years in my current job ;).

If you love the thought of being a hotel manager, change course. I guess it's too late in the year now but if you drop out of college get a job however low the pay, do the hard grind, and make your mind up.

You need to be thick skinned, thick soled and very people orientated for hotel management. The rewards financially are not great, but, if you love your job that is not the most important thing.

With regard to your parents. While i understand them thinking they have your best interests at heart, you will have to live your life long after they have lived theirs. Make sure it's a happy one!
