Rent Allowance

I've always wondered why a rent allowance *only* be paid at a post office, whereas other social welfare benefits (Disability, Jobseekers, Single Parent etc..) can be paid by Electronic Bank Transfer.

    Why is this?

Surely wouldn't be easier to send the payment to payees bank accounts directly and save queues at the PO especially in light of more people signing on with the recent downturn etc..

Is there a reason why the Rent Allowance is only paid at the Post Office?

Yes. Rent Allowance is means-tested. If you are earning something like €150 a week and paying up to €600 a month in rent you can apply for Rent Allowance.

Also, Rent Allowance is not always collected at a Post Office. I get mine in a cheque.
