Difference between these 2 processors?

Is there a significant difference between these two processors, regarding speed when running a number of programs and internet at the same time:

    Intel Pentium Dual Core T2390 (1.86 ghz, 1m L2 Cache, 533mhz FSB)

    AND

    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)

    Cheers

The t8100 would be a significantly better processor, both in clock speed and cache. However, i'm guessing there is a significant price difference between the machines in which you've seen these processors? For basic requirements the former would do you just fine. It comes down to the cost really, and what kind of programs, and of course cost will pay a significant role.

if it comes down to price versus performance than you have better tweaks available to you than upgrading a processor. For instance, using a 64 bit system instead of a 32 bit, and going from 2gb of ram to 4gb will give you a far more significant boost.

From an average user point of view I don't think you'll see much difference.
But some more recent software/game will feel "smoother" with the Core2.

Core2 has SSE4 instruction set, so if the software you want to use supports it, it will be "faster".

Another significant difference is the power consumption. Core2 consumes less than Pentium4.

64bit doesn't speed up anything unless they are 64bit computations.
2GB of RAM is plenty enough under XP, but under Vista go for 4GB.

Pentium DC is based on Core 2 arch, not Pentium 4....same chips more or less with reduced l2....35w tdp.

For running a few programs whilst browsing it's more then adequate assuming these programs are normal day to day ones and not encoding apps etc.

Not just that, they're pretty basic and crippled. I think PDC's are missing some of the intruction sets and features present in the more top range models. Not only that, but the T8100 will be made with a better process than the PDC... clock for clock it would still be a better performer, especially in power dissapation/use.

    Thanks for that,

Went for a laptop with the - Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB) - in the end. Dell Vostro 1310 instead on A860 with the other processor, was about €200 more but also had twice the ram and twice the hard drive , so I'm happy enough. Though was told that some of the deals included online - free shipping - double ram - were not available - had to ask to talk to supervisors and had 4 quotes with specs , before they got it right, even had to calculate the vat right for them.

Anyway done now, cheers for the advice

yep, you right... I didn't check...in my mind anything call Pentium is still based on old design, but I guess it's cheaper for Intel to sell CPUs that don't pass all their tests, disable the "broken" features and sell them under the older branding.

Good to know, the T8100 is really a better choice.
But you're "shopping" experience is scary.
