The registration for that shoot closed way before lunchtime today apparently. Hopefully we'll all be shooting IPSC again in the near future! It would be a crying shame if this sport doesn't continue.

I just reckon it's so popular because it's such great fun, but I'd never have found that out if I hadn't seen it first hand!

Inspired by what I've learned today - My New Year resolution is to visit as many different open shoots on fact finding missions as I can to learn about all the sporting shooting disciplines loved in Ireland. I won't call myself a shooter until I've at least seen them all!

I know I'm more a Sporting clay shooter (crap I might add) than a Trap or Skeet shooter, I've shot all the various shotgun clay sports and can make a well informed choice. But up to now I've poo poo'ed various shooting disciplines as 'not for me' without ever picking up a pistol here or a rifle there.

I think for the future of our collective sports we should make an effort to:

shoot DTL, if you've only ever shot 10m air pistol, shoot gallery rifle if you've only bench rested, shoot IPSC if you've only shot F-class, if you love vintage Mausers, let off a few from a tricked out AR-15, shoot WA1500 PPC instead of 25m rapid fire one day...........and so on.........

And no, I don't work for a firearm/ammo company (sadly)

    :D

After doing all that you'd have a fair idea of the politics among all the disciplines. That would make you a very valuable consultant to the DoJ about all this sh*te that's currently going on :D:D

G17 is right, It is best to try as many different disciplines as you can. Personally, I have tried WA1500 and PPC events, IPSC shooting, Benchrest rifle and benchrest pistol, ISSF Standard Pistol and Sport Pistol, Prone rifle 50meters with scope( bloody difficult) and Vintage Classic rifle. ( .303 Enfield, open sights).

This still leaves me with ISSF Air Pistol and Air Rifle, 25m rifle as discussed on the other thread ,Siluoette rifle and gallery rifle.

I believe that politics of the different organisations should not get in the way of someone wanting to shoot a particular discipline. EG. The whole ISSF, IPSC problem. Although my club may be affiliated to a particular NGB, If I want to shoot a discipline not covered by that NGB, I will contact the NGB who does cover it and arrange with them to shoot.

I'd love to do that. Lack of a car limits me to the generosity of others for transport and lack of a strong digestive system led me to miss the last VCRAI shoot much to my disgust.

I must make more effort next year. :)

I've done PP and fullbore shooting (AR15 and a Lee Enfield). Was then given that Russian WW2 gun - my shoulder is still sore!

It was great fun, and if there was a comp which had say 20 shots in each discipline I would be well up for it.

Won't be off buying a fullbore pistol anytime soon though!

I agree fully. With family taking priority I only get out to do a bit of shooting 2-3 times per month. Would love to give all the disciplines a go & even get back into archery again as well as all the other hobbies I had before I went down the whole route of house, mortgage, kids etc .... Perhaps when I retire I'll get some spare time :D

I'm trying to get to and try out as many things as possible, so we can arrange matters if possible.
