What kind of dvds to you want to burn ?

You can burn dvds from the finder - create a burn folder, populate it, click burn.

To make movies then every Mac comes with iDVD which creates menus and fully integrates with the rest of the iApps like iMovie, iPhoto and iTunes !!

I haven't been happy with the quality of Toast dvd's. Still reckon Nero Vision is the best, only downside is that it's not available on Macs :D

You can change the encoding settings on it.

    I only can second that.

Software for such general-purpose requirements came with your mac when you bought it, you don't need to pay for third-parties most of the time.
And of course you already paid for it.

This is what most switchers find hard to adapt to, it's not like on windows where for most functionality you'd have to install a new app.

Yes, Toast and similar may have features that the finder or disk utility doesn't, but most users who just want to burn a DVD as simply as possible won't be bothered.

As suspected earlier, you don't need third-party sw for any of this.

You should be fine with burning directly from within the finder. Another option is creating disk images of the right size (in disk utility), mounting them, copying your stuff onto them and initiating a burn.

Burnign from the finder wont encode the AVIs (or whatever the format) into playable DVDs, you'll just be left with files on a DVD.

He never mentioned that as a requirement.

maybe I was being clever, he did mention he wasnt happy with the quality of DVDs outputed from Toast, which made me assume that they were being encoded.
