And I might be inviting stupid answer's with that title, but..

    And I'm totally ignorant here..

Is AIDS still killing people in the developed world?.

Seriously, its something I haven't a clue about. I know years ago it was the big killer, and I know there's no 'cure' as such.

But is it a killer still or are people living with it now?.

Btw, today is World Aids Day.

My understanding is that their are alot living with it now a bit like Hep C. With the meds that are being used now its no longer the death sentence that it was 20 years ago. Still going to get you in the end, I have no HIV+ clients at the moment but the ones I see attending the clinic where I work seem to be in good nick. That's the best I can give you I tend to avoid all the medical info as my job is on the psych side of things. However, you question made me think I need to brush up my knowledge.

As long as there are ignorant idiots (in the developed world), there will always be AIDS. Its amazing how many people will not use condoms

Yeah, i've seen a mentality among lads that condoms are only to stop the girl getting preganant and if she is on the pill its alright to have sex without.

Read something in the paper about this the other day.

Something like 65% of people contracting HIV in Ireland are straight people who have caught it by having unprotected sex.

There are about 4,000 people in Ireland with HIV.

Rank order of countries as of 2002: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/rankorder/2156rank.html
Ireland is at #123 with 2,800 people.

Yup but 50% of the responsibility is the girls too.

I heard it suggested recently (albeit without a shred of evidence) that an AIDS "cure" had been developed, but that it is causing more physical harm than good in tests. Can anybody add any weight to this suggestion?

There seems to be a story going around the net that the Iranians have supposedly found a cure. Apparently they are using this 'discovery' as a shield against an American invasion. 'If you attack us we will destroy the cure for aids' sorta thing. Very 'king bizarre!

I don't think the yanks want to cure AIDS the profit from the medicines
is so outragous that the pharmacutical industry would allow "the cure"
to be released. Just a suggestion:cool:
I also believe the cure was found long ago

    Statistics

Newly Diagnosed HIV infections in Ireland - Summary 2006

A total of 337 HIV infections newly diagnosed during 2006 were reported to the HPSC. This compares to 318 diagnosed in 2005 and represents a 6.0% increase.

The cumulative total number of HIV infections reported to the end of 2006 is 4,419.

Of the 337 newly diagnosed cases, 169 were reported as having been heterosexually acquired. This compares to 168 in 2005 and 178 in 2004. These data should be interpreted with caution as information on probable route of transmission is unavailable for 22 of the cases newly diagnosed in 2006, making interpretation of trends difficult.

Of the 169 cases acquired through heterosexual contact, 104 were born in sub-Saharan Africa (63 female and 41 male) and 33 were born in Ireland (17 female and 16 male).

There were 57 new diagnoses in IDUs in 2006 compared to 66 in 2005 and 71 in 2004.

There were 83 new diagnoses in MSM in 2006 compared to 57 in 2005 and 64 in 2004.

HIV infection was newly diagnosed in three children in 2006. The probable route of transmission for two of the three cases was mother to child transmission (MCT).

In addition, there were 115 babies born to a HIV infected mother during 2006, 72 are not infected and 43 remain of indeterminate status (i.e. do not meet the criteria for HIV infection and are <18 months at time of test).

Of the newly diagnosed cases in 2006, 212 were male and 123 were female. Gender was unknown for two cases.

Of the 123 females with newly diagnosed HIV infection in 2006, 26 were reported to be pregnant at HIV diagnosis.

The mean age at HIV diagnosis was 34.0 years. The mean age among females was 30.8 years and among males was 35.9 years, a difference of 5.1 years.

Of the 283 cases where geographic origin was known, 125 were born in Ireland and 109 were born in sub-Saharan Africa. Data on geographic origin are not available for 54 cases.

Information on stage of infection at time of HIV diagnosis was available for 279 of the 337 cases. Of the 279 cases, 201 were asymptomatic and 28 were diagnosed with AIDS at the time of HIV diagnosis.

At total of 909 AIDS cases have been reported to the end of 2006 of which 397 are reported to have died. A total of 451 deaths have been reported in HIV infected individuals.

I heard that in Africa where AIDS is most prevalent, they have found some people (women only afaik) who seem to be genetically immune to it.

No source for this, just something I vaguely remember seeing in a documentary a while back.

If you saw the South Park AIDS episode you'd know that AIDS isnt the hippest disease to have anymore. All the cool kids have cancer. The only think AIDS people get is a Jimmy Buffet concert.

And as far as I know AIDS is still being thrown around like fat LARPers throw lightning bolts!

You're perfectly right on that one. Its a recessive mutation which alters and partially truncates the protein that the HIV virus must bind to in order to enter and subsequently infect the t lymphocyte meaning the virus cant enter the cell to replicate.

Ironically this mutation has been found to be more prevailent in those of European descent rather than on the diseases ancestral continent where one would expect it to be most common. One hypothesis is that this is due to the medieval plague selecting for this mutation but that has yet to be fully tested and seems to be a minority but exceptionally interesting hypothesis.
