dvd drive too noisy for watching movies

    hi all,

I built lately a media centre and when I went to watch a DVD I was very dissapointed to see how noisy the drive is.
The reasonis is that since the dvd drive was designed for computers, it operates at speeds much higher than an ordinary DVD recorder/player drive, which is not needed at all for playing back films.

the drive is a slim type mini DVD drive from Pionneer http://www.mcubed-store.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=44_50&products_id=159

I have tried to use two different programs that allow reducing the sped:
CD room tool and nero speed drive. However, they do not seem to work with that drive. Does anybody have any idea of other software that will do the trick?

    Thanks

I think you're barking up the wrong tree. The drive will only speed up when reading DVD/CD data not media. So when playing a movie the drive is working at 1x speed. It's just a noisy drive is all.

media tank, I think you are right.

    Thanks for that.

    i am confused now...
Microsoft acknowledges a similar problem with CD roms... (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa508879.aspx). I quote some text as follows:
"CD-ROM drives in media-center computers primarily perform operations, such as audio playback, that do not require speeds above 1X. CD-ROM drives that spin at, for example, 16X during playback, when a speed of only 1X is required, can produce loud noise that leads to a bad user experience."

So, CD ROM spin at more speed that required for playing back a CD. Is this not the same problem I have with the DVD spining at more speed that required fo playing back a DVD?

    Thanks

At the very least the DVD will run at full tilt when you first put it in as it reads the TOC. Often an aftermarket firmware can be flashed onto the drive to shut it up..

what do you mean by the TOC?

    I tried to use:
    1. Nero drive speed
    2. CD rom tool
    3. A pionneer software for other dvd models
No software was able to do the trick? Do you know any other 3rd party applications?

    thanks

Table Of Contents to identify what is on the DVD/CD. I think you'll need to replace it.

MediaTank, in the sentence "I think you'll need to replace it", I thought you meant the TOC. Did you mean the DVD drive?
