Knee Trouble

Four years ago I crashed coming down Balglass Hill in Howth. My knee bore the brunt of the impact with an armco barrier and was bruised and swollen after the event. I never bothered getting it checked out at the time cause I thought it would be okay once the swelling went away.
That was not the case and yet again tonight while out cycling I was reminded that the injury is still there.
What I'd like to know is where to go to get it sorted.
Do I go to a sports physio or should I go to the my gp?
Do I need to get an x-ray?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I've left this on the long finger for far too long.

Can you point out where the pain is on your knee?

When is it bad (i.e. flexing your knee, under heavy load)

Are there any odd clicks/pops? Does it swell up after cycling?

As usual, the best answer in these cases is normally to see your GP as soon as possible. My first guess would be some kind of tearing to the cartilage or meniscus as a result of trauma, buts thats a bit like saying "your headache may be causes by a gunshot wound to the head" without any further information.

    Thanks for the response Dirk.

On the outside, although I can't press on any sore point.

I climbed Howth Hill from the Village twice last week and it didn't bother me but I don't think I could do that now.
Mostly it doesn't bother me if I don't cycle, although I drive for a leaving and sometimes reaching for the clutch pedal aggravates it. Also kneeling hurts.

No odd clicking and no visible swelling.

Yeah, I'm not expecting a diagnosis over the web - just wondering what's the best course of action to take to fix it.

Hmm...best advice would be not to aggravate it and go see a GP when convenient. I know you have to drive the taxi but I would lay off the bike and anything else that irritates it.

Yeah, it definitely needs attention - I'll let you know what the doc says.
    Thanks.
