    Moi!

I bought my '86 S2 nearly a year ago. It is my daily driver.

There is another 928 owner on boards that I know of - I'm sure he'll be around here to say hello

What 928 do you have? Any pics?

Is your car an '86? I saw one recently (can't remember where though, I think I saw it in Ballyfermot or Walkinstown or somewhere), and it had '86 plates on it.

EDIT: My bad, I see yours is an '86, feckin' booze! :D

I don't think I've driven it in either Ballyfermot or Walkinstown recently :)

    Hi whyty01.

The one in Walkinstown looks a bit sad and unloved.

BTW I have a '94 GTS for about 18 months. I looked at a few before purchasing - may have included yours. Was yours metallic gray with a radiator problem when purchased?

There is a before and after pic but could only fit one in. spent too many years unloved but im getting it back slowly but surely. Thankfully alot of it was just the bodywork and not much mechanically only a general service and it roared back to life.

    Hi,

I'd love to hear more about your experiences with the car. I'd be very tempted by a '79 928 manual as a second car. I saw a lovely silver 79 WW car a few months back and I keep an eye on 928.org for likely suspects.

]The 928 is a great car but im a bit bias. A manual is rare as most have an auto box but if you find one with a good clutch you should be alright.

The biggest thing with these cars is the timing belt but think a 79 is a non-interference engine so you should be ok there. You better check that out first if im not right.

The earlier cars are easier to work on also. The body does not rush so you should have no issue there either. Electrics are the next biggest thing as it is a GT car it has all creature comforts electric seat, cruise control and a complex central warning system all of these should be checked to see if there working as they should.

Other than that there a very strong car with a big V8 which should run forever and a 79 would mean cheap tax so all in all there a great car to buy.

    What whyty01 said

Of course I'm biased as well, but there's a lot to say for the 928. Heavy powerful big V8 in the front, driven at the back, near perfect weight distribution. Lots of aluminium bodyparts and the body was galvanised. Very easy to drive for a car this powerful. Mine's an auto and I wouldn't even have considered a manual. There's a pretty decent wiki article here

Mechanically these cars are extremely strong - the engine should be good for half a million kilometres

The electrics were very advanced at the time. And there are many of them. This is the cars weak point

The earliest engine was a 4.5l (upped in '83 to 4.7l (S2) and in '86 to 5.0l (S4) and in '91 to 5.4l (GTS)). This earliest 4.5l one is definitely non-interference. The timing belt / waterpump job is expensive though

I've had the car for nearly a year now and I had two issues. One was an intermittent starting problem - diagnosed and fixed that myself for free and the other was an ABS issue. Fixed by independent specialist. Apart from that the car has been very reliable. Starts first time every time, even if not driven for 2 weeks or when the temps are sub-zero

If you can't / won't do maintenance yourself, make sure you have an independent specialist who can do it for you

First post - Recently bought a '79 928 - I'm in Cork aswell - although picking my brains (on this anyway) wouldn't yield much. Car is currently maturing in my cellar waiting for it to be the correct vintage...

    Some good information here:

    Recently bought a '79 928

Car is currently maturing in my cellar waiting for it to be the correct vintage...

Maturing, correct vintage for motor tax, VRT? :D

    Good guess! :) I've a 74 spider and a 72 GT Junior
928 is my first foray into German car ownership, V8 car ownership and automatic car ownership - it's been fun so far!
First car magazine I ever bought had a 928 in it and I wanted one since then

Maturing, correct vintage for motor tax, VRT? :D

You might very well say that - I couldn't possibly comment ;)

    whyty01 - you have pm

God I want one. Always been one of my favourite cars. I was thinking of a 968 or late model 944 but I am seriously tempted.

That is a fantastic car....! Well done...! An odd 924/944/968 in this country but very few 928's unfortunately

You could try TIPEC http://forums.tipec.net/index.php who are a nice bunch and brave and helpful

Theres PCGB as well http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/default.asp but you cant look at the site unless you register as a non member ;)

I think Rennlist was mentioned by the lads as well.. Good site from the US

Theres absolutely SFA in this country for owners of frontrunner Porsches. In my experience the PCI is a bit snoooty and geared tword 07/08 Porsches. Bit of a "closed door shop" and cliquish. Badge snobbery I think its called....!

Absolutely no point in trying to get parts from Belgard.. Nigh on useless. Dont have a clue unless they are trying to sell you a brand new car. I phoned them once to ask about a timing belt/tensioner for my '87 944 but they didnt have a notion. Even asked "Are you sure its a Porsche?"

Issac Agnew in Belfast 048 90389999 are really first class in my experience. They know their stuff and have no problem helping you out over the phone. They will give you the VAT off as well if you have a VAT number ;)

We have a small group of 924/44/68's here in Galway. Not really a club just a gathering of like minded people who go on the odd run and get mucked in if there is a problem with somebodys car. Very educational and a bit of craic..
