    Hi,
Just looking for info on employment in call center jobs in Galway. If anyone has info on where to start looking and also I hear these jobs are quite easy to get and always employing. Is this true? Finally what is the usual rate per hour? Cheers for any info!

Jesus you must be desperate. I've heard nothing but bad stories about those places.

Just a FYI, in Ireland it is spelt "centre" not "center". This makes a big difference when you search on jobsites, e.g. call centre versus call center

It is 'easy' in that it's not particularly taxing but it's hard work in that you could be receiving calls almost non-stop and you may get abusive customers.

I worked part-time in tech support for a couple of years during college.

Call centre jobs are grand. Yes, you get the odd prick but in general you're just sitting on your ass getting a wage which is somewhat above minimum wage.

It's not something you'd want to do for life, but if you're smart and you can play a bit of office politics you could get promoted to team leader within two years or so.

The nastiness of the customer does depend on your product though. I was lucky that I worked for a well liked product. I'd say some places could be horrendous.

speaking from experience. The job is easy to get. But there is a reason for that. No one ever wants to stay there. Plus, in most of those places you pay is mostly based on comision. You get your regular hourly rate. which in most cases is minimum wage, and the rest depends on your targets and sales. so basically you need to be good at selling otherwise you're getting abuse, abuse oh and, some more abuse.

I'd have to agree with AARGH in that it does depend on the product/company you're working for. The work is generally pretty easy but if you're someone who needs to be challenged it will get very dull very quickly, even in the nicest environment.

I used to work in the call centre for a well-respected airline, so not too many nasty customers and the rules around breaks and lunches weren't too strict. After a year I knew the answer to every question a customer could throw at me and could recite them in my sleep. Dreaded the thought of going in to work just to answer the same questions over and over, take call after call after call and nothing else.

Having said that though, if you're someone who loves to talk to people then this kind of work might suit you down to the ground. I have a friend who works in a customer support call centre who is like this, and she loves it.

I don't want to put you off, just be aware of what you're getting yourself into!

Are they not impossible to get now, though?

I'd expect most are still recruiting to some extent. Most have a very high turnover so need to take people on continuously to make up for it. It would slow down as less of their staff are able to find jobs elsewhere, but there will still be some people who up and leave cos they've had enough. Check the main job boards and try calling a couple of the recruiters to get more info :)

MICROS-Fidelio are pretty much always hiring, might be worth keeping an eye on http://www.micros-fidelio.co.uk/careers/ireland_jobs/
Helps if you have a bit of an IT or hospitality background (if you have both, you're laughing)
