    Folks

Taking the plunge here... first C&C and I'm very much a newbie who after Christmas is hoping to take the plunge into the world of DSLRs. I'm really looking for comments on how I cam improve this pic, both in terms of angle etc I took it from and also what I could do now to improve it.

    Thanks *s

    It's a bit small. ;)

Try posting a larger version (no longer than 800 on its longest edge though), or make it clickable to your Flickr page.

Hope this helps... still trying to figure all this out lol. If you do visit the flickr page I'd be very happy with comments on improving any of the others posted there too.

    Thanks *s

I like it, but the horizon looks a teensy bit crooked to me - of course, my eyes may still be crooked from last night.

    Hi dreamer,

It looks like a pretty good start to your posting career to me.:) The colours are good, the subject has a lot of interest and the light in the sky and on the hills is captured well. Also there's a nice line along the quayside pulling your eye into the image and drawing the attention to the boats and the colorful buildings.

If it were my shot, I'd probably look to change a couple of things. I'd move closer to the shoreline if possible before taking the shot because I don't think the foreground is adding a lot. If anything, I find it a bit distracting, whereas, if it was just water, it would allow the viewer to focus more on the main subject.

The other thing I'd change is to crop out the right hand side a bit (either in the camera before taking the shot or afterwards) for much the same reason. I don't think that there's much in front of the blue boat that adds to the image, since the strength of this shot lies in the fact that the eye is drawn along the quay towards the town.

Don't be discouraged by the nitpicking, though. Focus on the positives and you're well on your way. A DSLR will give you much better control over your shots and make it easier to transfer what you have in your head to the finished article.

PS I don't think that it's just Thoie's horizon thats off beam today, there's a wee bit of straightening needed!

Thanks folks, this is great *s. Don't worry about criticism at all, I'm very much at the learning stage and am keen to try and improve as much as possible.

    Thanks again :)
