Came across this in todays Sunday Mirror, hence no on line source yet.

Apparently Gardai have been using an illegal immigrant Chinese guy to interpret Asian offenders in custody at the Bridewell Garda Station. I think this is kinda ironic seen as the Gardai have their own illegal immigrant bureau. Someone did not do their homework. :D

Surely if this guy was illegal in the country any of the work carried out by him, statements etc would be unauthorized and invalid. :D

I wouldn't say it was any legalese they were translating, just "get off yer hole", "whats yer name" etc.

They'll find out what he's up to when mysterious deliveries show up from the local Chinese takeaway.

The Gardai use a third-party to source/vet/provide translators. It'd be nice if you once got (a) facts, and (b) the facts right, Run_to_da_hills. You would also bitch, moan, rant and post a new thread if you discovered that the Gardai were doing background checks on everyone who worked with them (or, dare I suggest it, simply showed them a valid national ID card).

well in fairness i think "Run_to_da_hills" levity was aimed at the Gardai, and not the foreign guy, if he ever existed......

no else see the flaw in this?

garda: ask him if he did it

interpreter (in chinese): did you do it?

    offender: yes

    interpreter: he said no.

The guy (If he ever existed) is an illegal immigrant, not an illegal Chinese man or illegal English speaker... I cannot express this in funny terms, so I'll give up: Just because his immigration status is questionable doesn't mean his language skills are (For all you know).
The whole concept of interpretation is tricky, but I'm sure they could tape the interview (Oh, that's right, they do) and play it back in court with an(other) interpreter under oath.

Not the point, I posted this thread because of the Irony of the authorities hiring an illegal to do some work when they themselves are supposed to be overseeing the deportation of these guys. There was no mention in the papers of how long they were using this guy whether he was regular or just a once off or was he paid. There might be more about it tomarrow. What background check, all he had to do was produce his passport and show his visa stamp.

But, it is the point. He would have been paid (Unpaid tends to scream incompetent in courts, and there are contracts), but they did not hire him. They paid for a translation service who 'hired' him. The onus is on the translation service to vet the translators suitability for the role. The accusation of hypocrisy stands too - how do you expect an organisation like the Gardai to 'oversee the deportation of these guys' if you don't want them checking their credentials & status? It also appears to be a damn good reason for a National ID. At present, all immigrants are required to have a GNIB with them, but if the Gardai demanded this from every non-native they'd be accused of being racist. So a generic National ID that all citizens should have would provide a means of credentials without the accusations or negative effects.

I would hate to be getting chased by an Asian Garda, He would be flying through the air and doing backflips after me! I'd say the interpreter feels bad hassling immigrants of his own kind.

Someone did not do their homework. :D

    :D

Yeah. You. What's an illegal immigrant bureau and assuming you mean GNIB but didn't bother to check what exactly do you expect them to do?

Another one of your rants. Don't know why I'm even bothering really

It was the Sunday Mirror that didn't do their homework properly. RTDH just copied their answers. :D

I can see this card coming, and it will be through the EU as I don't think the
    Government can afford it now.:D

I had the US social security & Green card in the States 15 years ago and back then one couldn't get an official job without it. It was also $10.000 fine and it was the onus on the employee to check it out before they hired you. This was before they tightened their belt up after 9/11.

In this case it would be the person who supplied the interpretive service to the guards to check the credentials of your man.

I know a guy who worked as an Arabic interpreter in the courts while his asylum application was being processed.
