My daughters macbook( Intel Core Duo, purchased June '07), on startup goes through Post and then the display comes on with a blank grey screen. This is as far as it goes. Previously it had frozen intermittently. I have zapped pram and smc. Any ideas?

Have you tried booting from the recovery dvd ? Insert the DVD, reboot, hold down the C key after the chime. Once booted try the utilities menu and run the Disk Utility and try repair permissions or verify.

Try this first then tell us what the results are.

I have discs 1 and 2. Tried disc 1 (holding c key). No joy. Works with holding "T" key, but alas no cable. Apparently did boot up to "?" previously, this would indicate a HD problem.

not necessarily...simply means it can't find a bootable system.

boot with the cd inserted and holding option/alt (whatever way your keyboard is)....this should bring up a list of the bootable volumes.....if the CD doesn't show up then you've got a CD or CD drive problem to boot.

Latest is I have managed to boot up from cd. Using Disc utilities the following errors are reported:

Invalid Volume Header
Checking HFS Plus Volume.
Invalid B-tree node size
Volume check Failed

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

Hope this helps and thanks guys.

The "Verify Disc Permissions" and "Repair Disc Permissions" are greyed out.

Just "verify" and "repair". The HDD is also greyed out and the result from "verify" is shown earlier. I would try putting a new HDD in and formatting etc. But I'm wondering if its a logic board error. I suppose there's one way to find out....
