They're all big grand tourismo cars, except the Porsche, which is a sports car

If you're gonna clock up mega motorway miles and want to do so in sublime comfort and still at high speed when you want it, get any of the GTs. I'd probably pick the AMG

If you want a sportscar, the choice is limited :)

I'd go for the XKR, just 'cos.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,155 ✭✭✭✭Berty

Depends what you want it for.

I picked the SL 550 because i prefer it looks wise over the rest.

    Who are you renting with?

A lot of them 'wont have' your choice on the day and offer you an upgrade to some American big block.

Go for a big mother fooking american muscle car :P

Its gonna be expensive anyhow. I wanted to rent a luxury car, a Chrysler 300 CC(american luxury standard) but decided to spend my money elsewhere so downgraded to a Pontiac. They only had a 300CC left when I arrived so I got upgraded for free. :D

I want to go back and hire the mustang convertible again and drive from New York to Miami.

Route 69 BTW is not all its cracked up to be. Its all bypassed really.

Been there, done that. It's like driving a sofa on top of a waterbed. Loads of noise, no 'go' and scary going around corners.

You cant do route 69 in anything but that the first time though. Its written into history and law itself.

    Cramped, uncomfortable, uncontrollable Carrera S..

I'd take the SL 600 (V-12) or M6 any day.

Have you ever driven one? I'm 6"3 and I fit perfectly, found the sport seats perfectly comfortable and in terms of handling it is an absolute peach to drive.

For me it would be the porker, no contest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,529 ✭✭✭TJJP

Didn't like mine. far prefer my CL600. For the trip proposed I'd take the M6 or SL, but its chalk and cheese, and I take your point that the Porche is a nice car.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 316 ✭✭reverandkenjami

I'd take the M6.. Plenty of engine and suspension setting adjustments to keep you occupied!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

I'm sitting here in bed, laptop in hand.. 3 in 1 n a few chicken balls beside me n 9 pints in my belly... As u can tell, i'm in a perfect state to drive... I'll be covering about 200-250 miles over about 8hrs... It'll all be around las vegas... I'm renting from a company that only do the listed cars.. Over the 2 1/2 weeks I'll be there i'll be driving a cadillac dts and a chrysler 300c also...

First thing that came into my head was the porsche.. but the merc/bmw m6 was also in the back of my mind... Curry sleep Zzzzzzzz

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,529 ✭✭✭TJJP

Right now I'd take the curry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

Currys gone... Time to hit the jacks... Curry always seems like a good idea.............

Actually, that's not a bad idea at all.

Probably not the most comfortable ride ever, though. Depends very much on where you're planning on driving to.

    NTM

OP, I'm sure you checked this out beforehand but just in case........are you aware that most of those "specialist" car hire companies in Vegas do not offer insurance on their cars the way Avis etc do?

There prices are just for the cost of the car hire and you must use your own car insurance to cover it.....therefore renting is restricted to US residents.

I only know this because I tried to hire a super-duper car to treat myself when I was in Vegas but couldn't because of the insurance snag :(

Edit: I only tried to rent from a couple of places along the strip so if you have found somewhere that does rent out car like these to us foreigners can you post a linky? Cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

I've rang around most of the car hire places in vegas.. They all offer insurance at a an extra cost... It depends on what car ur renting.. U can rent a Ferrari 360 but the insurance is around $300 extra for the day. I find its always best to ring about these kinda things n talk to someone, I never do it over the net...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,651 ✭✭✭Captain Slow IRL

I picked the m6 only because of the absence of an m5! Why not rent out a corvette or similiar big engined yank tank? When in Rome..........

Ah, only for a day! Comfort doesn't matter so. From your list, I'd get the Porsche.

But why stop there? All the cars on your list are impressive. Yet you might own or drive any one of them again in your life. I'd probably spend another few hundred € (the trip is gonna cost you thousands anyway) and get a Ferrari or Lamborghini for a truely one-off experience :)

Was gonna go for a 360 but its $1000-1500 for a day... Depends on who u hire one from... Porsche is $360 for the day

My point exactly. What's a few hundred extra on a trip that's very expensive anyway? Go for it man! Last chance to spend silly money before you settle down and the money will go towards nappies :D

There are next to no corners in Vegas, also the traffic on the strip is muck. Best to get the car with the best mix of comfort/straight line speed. Id imagine that the M6 will be a bit hard riding so for me it would be the XKR or the SL.

Also both are V8's (albeit supercharged) which is the least you could do if your going to be in the states.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

You can get wheelspin in the SL600 in 5th gear at 60mph.

I'm hardly gonna rent a car to drive around the city....

I'll be heading to the hoover dam, round lake mead and through the valley of fire...

The roads are still pretty straight to be fair. No hairpins.

If you're heading for the grand canyon then you'll need something with ground clearance.

M6. Or stretch to an F-car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭Dibble

I know it's not on the list but I second the Hertz Shelby GT350/500 recommendation. The black with gold stripes combo looks great. When in Rome and all that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 888 ✭✭✭tdc

The 2008 SL55 AMG will be an older model, not the new one. The new model only has 6.3 and 6.5 engines.

If you can, go for the 360

I've been looking for it but I can't find it anywhere... Anyone got links to it??

This might work, it's their customer service form:

    https://www.hertz.ca/rentacar/customersupport/index.jsp?targetPage=contactUsView.jsp&leftNavUserSelection=globNav_8_1

There is also a link to a list of phone numbers if you would prefer to ring them.

On their live chat at the mo finding out how to rent one...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,828 ✭✭✭unklerosco

From what I can tell u can no longer rent a Hertz Shelby... They where only out for a limited time and there's none available on the West Coast of America, they're taking the '08 cars out of service at the mo so they must have most of the retired n ready for sale...

Go for some high end red neck class, Ford F-150 lightening, the most fun I ever had on four wheels, these things won't go straight:cool:
