    They work here

They connect to an aerial, so they might work on ntl

    No broadband

Really? I thought they only worked with DVB-T... has anyone actually tested Play TV here?

They don't work here yet. The irish DTT, unlike the UK DTT, is based on Mpeg4, not Mpeg 2.

Although the Ps3 will decode mpeg 4, Play TV itself, at the moment, only decodes Mpeg 2.

I am afraid if you buy it, you will be wasting your money for the moment.

They will not work with NTL.

    It is digital, not analogue.

It wont work with NTL. It will work with Digital Terrestrial only.

+1, unfortunately! There will be an Irish version sometime next year according to Sony, once the Irish government finalise the digital standard.

It has been finalised. The delay has nothing to do with the government.

Hopefully, thats the case. Then I wont have to get a freesat-HD/mpeg4 combo(Will they ever come FFS!!). I can just get any old freesat box and play tv:)

And it wont be an "irish version" at all really. Many European countries will be using mpeg4 DTT in the not too distant future

It won't work over here. The hardware is working fine in England at the moment ,so they don't need to change it.Maybe if we get extra signals or sony changes the decoder on the device:(

I presume they are waiting until there are actually channels available so they can market it to people.

Little point in releasing it now just because the government finalized the spec if they there are nobody has the channels yet (I know there is a trial on but its only a trial).

In fact we are going to be ahead of the times. The UK DTT system is based on the old MPEG2 system where as Ireland and the rest of EU will be using MPEG4 which has HD support and better bitrates.

I think Autumn this year for RTE to launch their service and the boxes to be available so probably next year before this comes out.

Could be sooner though. Some other european countries are launching mpeg4 dtt soon(Possibly sooner than us) and that may hurry sony up in launching the ps3 firmware update that will allow us to use play tv like in the uk. Cant wait for it cos it'll be so easy to record tv. No need to fiddle with the dvd recorder any more.:)
