    Hey lads,

Basically my PS3 won't load games. I put the disc in, and it won't give me the disc icon; it just won't load. The problem started when I was playing a game and it crashed, completely crashed; I couldn't even quit the game to go back to menu. It wouldn't let me reset even. So I turned if off at the back. When I turned it back on, the disc wouldn't load and no discs load.

    It's broke isn't it.:(

Which type of PS3 is it? Sounds like the laser but you could try a lens cleaner I guess?

    Hows your warranty situation?

have you considered a factory reset from the system settings ?
(i dont know if that will delete all your saved files though)

Before you do anything, back up all your saves and other stuff you need onto a removable hard disk or flash drive.

Then do a full hard drive reformat (not the quick one, the full one that takes about 4 hours.)

What happened to you happened to me when I first loaded up Dead Space. A full HDD reformat solved the problem for me and it hasn't happened since. Maybe that'll work for you.

Happened to me to. Mine would read cd's and DVDs though, everything except blu-rays(and games). Thought maybe the blu-ray laser was bust but then tryed a lens cleaner and it worked fine. Btw got the lens cleaner in D.I.D for 15 euro.

Disaster. Nothing worked, and we've misplaced the warranty and the receipt. The only thing we haven't tried is the lens cleaner because that nullifies the warranty, but since we can't find that I'll be buying a lens cleaner. Not holding my breath though. This sucks.:(

EDIT Anyone up-to-date on what the current prices are for the PS3?

Same as they've always been: about €400.

For some reason that's not as bad as I had feared. Thanks.

You could try replacing the Blu Ray drive yourself. There are a few tuts online. Before that though it would be worth ringing Sony (Eire:0818 365 065) and quoting the serial number on the box or maybe the PS3 itself.

60€ is better than 400€ for a repair. Good luck.

Edit: is there a warranty? I dont think so. Its the serial that you quote to them IIRC.

Sony asked me for my Name, Address, post Code, Telephone Number and the PS3 Serial number and Spec...eg 60GB ect Nothing too taxing.

    Thats all

Ring Sony - Tell them you can't find the receipt, but you bought it in XXXX on whatever date. they ask for a copy of the receipt IF YOU HAVE IT. They should replace it with a refurb for free anyway. Did for me last week, even though it was a month out of warranty.

Same happened to me last thursday, ps3 stopped reading discs for the second time this year. Looking for the receipt everywhere until I realised that smyths never returned my receipt when I had it replaced under warranty last march.
After many frustrating calls to smyths I gave up and rang sony. After about 15 mins on the phone the guy on the phone took all my details and told me sony Ireland would be contacting me in 3-5 working days about having it replaced. :D
So anyway my point is don't worry about the receipt just ring sony and let them take care of it. They'll know if your ps3 is still covered under the warranty with the serial number.

And to make matters worse last friday I got an invite for the home beta on not one but two of my psn accounts :(

Thanks lads, encouraging thoughts. Well I rang Sony and left my details, all I can do is keep my fingers crossed. My brother told me he spoke to someone who Sony told no dice because they said that it had "two years worth of dust in it". I hope that doesn't happen to us and our story will end like yours whiterebel and eoin!
