question about dole/pps/NI number

Hi. I'm on the dole here in Ireland. now there may be a job for me in England that I'd love to take. but in order to get it i will have to get a NI (same as pps ) number.however it could take a while to get the job or it could fall through. So my question is can I apply and hold an NI number and keep my dole in the mean time until i get the English job sorted or will it automatically mean that i get cut off ???

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Won't it get cut off when you move outside the jurisdiction? And you need to be resident in the UK to get an NI number so....??

You will need a UK address to get a NI number.
Think about it, you can't walk in with no address and no ID and get a NI insurance number.

So you'll need to have your documentation ready

You can certainly have both numbers, you'll only be able to claim anything or pay monies towards one or the other system though depending on where you're working/ living at the time. You don't need either number before hand to get the job though, you'll just get assigned one once you start work and start getting paid and the NI system then realises that you don't exist for them yet.

I've only done it the opposite way round though, but at some point when claiming for something how long you've been paying into their system will come up. Credits that you have from either the Irish or UK systems are transfereable between the two though.

You need proof that you live at the address...utility bills, bank statements and the like. It's getting more and more like the inquisition as the years go on!

They'll accept a bill accompanied by a letter from the person who has the utility in their name saying that you now live there.

This is all about stopping the bad people ... nothing like the inquisition at all.

I was referring to it being akin to the inquisition compared to how it was a few years ago. I got mine no hassle when I moved to England almost 10 years ago; my housemate in Belfast applied for hers a couple of months ago and was dragged across the coals. Certainly when she applied for hers the bill had to be in her name. I doubt bad people would be stopped by the minor inconvenience of getting a friend with a gas bill to write a note and say they live with them, do you?

I got my NI number 3 weeks ago and the only proof of address was the letter the NI sent me advising where and when to attend an interview. i found it remarkabley easy to get, had it within 10 days.

Perhaps they are less stringent dependant on the area. Who knows.
