Mum with MRSA

My Mum is diabetic and after burning her foot was admitted into hospital earlier this week. She spend 28 hours on a trolly in a corridor before finally getting a bed - shes very well covered with VHI, but there were no beds available. I was ripping that she was kept so long, but what can you do? Thats a seperate issue.

Anyway, fast forward to today and Ive just been told she now has MRSA. Im aware that there is an incubation period and that alot of people are carriers anyway, but I dont know an awful lot about it. Ive been looking it up all morning but cant find anything that gives me timelines and realistic expectation of symptoms, recovery period etc.

Has anyone had experience of this? Shes now in a private ward and is comfortable and is having antobiotics pumped through her. My Dad is very upset and so are my brothers, so I need to arm myself so I can calm them down. Im scared because I dont know what Im dealing with here and I know nothing about it.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Not being a smart arse here but I'd suggest just asking the doctor or nurses at the hosptial a few questions about that. Those who are medically qualified here would probably not know enough about this specific case to tell you anything more meaningful than your mothers' doctor at the hospital could. The rest of us would be very unwise to tell you anything at all.

Talk to the doctors, or have your mother talk to them.

Agree with the above. No-one here can give you advice on yor mum's condition. You would be very unwise to take the advice of anyone who offered it on a message board. The spectrum of MRSA is massive. So, you reall need to talk to your mum's team.

Hope it goes well for her though.

Deepsense I have to echo what the above posters have recommended.

I have seen so many patients and families get understandably quite upset when MRSA is mentioned.

I think it is very important for your Mum and family to talk to the nurses and doctors involved in her care. If her diagnoses have not been explained ask for some clarification. The nursing staff who are on the ward and seeing her most often might be the best place to start. If youu Mum or family still have questions, ask would it be possible to meet a member of the medical team at a mutually convenient time.

Try and comply with the infection control measures that are being implemented (gowning up; gloves etc) but do not be alarmed as these are now standard for many patients in hospital with varying types of infection or even "carriage" of MRSA.

Hope your Mum is home and well soon!

Hey sorry to hear your mom contracted MRSA.
My granmother managed to get it years ago but is fine now.
I am doing postgraduate studies on MRSA and have alot of literature on it.
I agree that noone only the doctors can discuss your mothers condition as there are differect severities of it.
However if you would like some literature to read up on or any info on MRSA feel free to PM me and I can pass on what I know and some literature for you.

For info on your mothers specific case though it's best to talk to the professionals who are dealing with your moms case at the hospital.

    Best of Luck!!

    Jen

MRSA is also not always hospital acquired - it exists in the community - speak with the team about this.
