Microsoft are pulling XP from January 2009, so once the XP stocks run out at suppliers you will only be able to get Vista machines, my wife has an Inspiron with Vista and hasnt given any problems, uses it for surfing and basics aswell.

With 4GB ram and 250GB HDD you shouldnt have any resource issues with Vista or Office, i currently run office and open office on a 2GB machine and it is fast enough.

Wouldn't be too concerned with vista with 2gb of RAM and a core 2 duo, should run grand for your needs.

With a few tweaks you can make Vista look like XP ie. set the start menu to 'classic' and the menus to classic etc.

And take a look below - some guy has converted some of the old XP themes to Vista.

If the hardware is capable of running it and it looks like XP to the Mrs....

XP Home was extended for ultra low cost laptops, the likes of the Asus EeePC and the Acer Aspire One, until 2010 (or one year after the release of Windows 7, whichever is sooner) but not for anything else.
