Belin Wifi Router incompaible with BT modem?

    Hi,

I'm trying to set up my Belkin router (model F5D7230C) with my BT Ireland broadband which is PPPoE. Wi-fi router is connected directly to computer, modem (Voyager 210 ADSL router) is connected to phoneline and also to wi-fi router via ethernet cable. I get through all the installation steps until it searches for internet connectivity which is the final step but this fails each time.

I had this working on a previous broadband connection in a different house when I was with Smart but I cleared all settings by resetting to factory settings.

Any ideas? The wireless network has been set up, I can find that on my laptop but it doesn't have internet connectivity. Neither does my PC when it's wired through the wi-fi router to the modem.

I rang Belkin support who basically told me it wasn't compatible with ADSL. Is this true? I think they were just out of ideas.

As an aside, when I put the ethernet cable into the modem slot on the wi-fi router, it doesn't give me that usual click that it has slotted into place. Is this the problem? I've swapped cables a few times so I think it might be the modem connection point on the router cos for a brief moment I actually got internet on my PC (wired directly to router) but then it disappeared again.

    Thanks,

    Donal.

Put the Belkin into bridge mode (DCHP off) and let the BT modem do the routing and it should work. Forget about PPPoE on the Belkin.

Thanks for the quick response. I tried that, by turning the DCHP server off and enabling wireless bridging. It just resulted in the IP address of the wi-fi router not working and Windows telling me I have little or no connectivity.

When you say to forget about PPPoE on the router, what connection type should I make it there? It's currently selected as PPPoE. Should I change this?

Thanks again for any help, been at this all week.

If it helps, when wi-fi router is connected ipconfig /all returns

    Windows IP configuration
    Host name: docaoimh
    Primary DNS Suffix (blank)
    Node TYpe: unknown
    IP routing enabled: no
    WINS Proxy enabled: no

    Ethernet adpater local area connection
    Connection specific DNS Suffix: (blank)
    Description: INtel...
    Physical Address: 00-.....
    Dhcp enabled: yes
    Autoconfiguration enabled: yes
    IP Address: 0.0.0.0
    Subnet mask: 0.0.0.0
    Default gateway:(blank)
    DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1

Navigating to http://192.168.2.1 doesn't bring back the router page anymore, how can I figure out what IP address to use for this now? http://192.168.1.1 is the address of the modem when it's connected directly to computer, not through wi-fi router.

Obviously no IP address is a problem!!

Edit: I added in IP addresses on the PC when connected to the wi-fi router as suggested by BT tech support yesterday. The no connectivity warning is not displaying anymore but I still can't connect to the page for the wi-fi router.

    Any suggestions?

No, the Belkin Wi Fi Router is not incompatible with my BT modem as suggested by the lovely people at Belkin who suggested buying other models. I entered the IP addresses suggested by BT tech help for my PC onto the wi-fi router and got things working. Thanks kaizersoze for setting me in the right direction!

I now can't access the internet on my PC which is wired to the wi-fi router directly but I'll have to play around with it from here.

By the way, any tips on getting wireless download speeds up? They seem to be about a quarter of what I get on my PC.

Try This....disconnect the modem from the phone line...and see if it works....by the way do you have Sky TV too?

I've finally got this resolved completely. Basically, the wi-fi router IP address is 192.168.2.1 so the computers connected to it needed to be in the 192.168.2.x range. Wrote about it yesterday on my blog - http://www.donal.ie/2008/12/07/getting-my-belkin-wi-fi-router-working-with-bt-broadband/. Just glad it's sorted!

Big thumbs down to Belkin for suggesting to buy a new router!

Thanks for the suggestions bonzer1again but I don't have Sky. Wouldn't give them ghouls money every month!
