Toshiba remote not working

My wife bought a Toshiba RD XS27 off IBOOD and when it arrived the remote does not work. The player seems to work fine and I tried the trick of looking at the sender on the remote through the camera on my phone and it does light up when a button is pressed. Am I missing something simple or is a new remote the only option?…

What about a universal remote? Which one?

I really don't want to go through IBOOD's notoriously bad customer service dept.
