    Hey lads

just bought a sony ht-sf 1300 5.1 surround sound kit and just getting everything connected up at the moment..im using it for both my ps3 and pc to output sound through..now the ps3 works fine outputing sound on all channels through this use of cables Ps3 > hdmi > Amp > hdmi > TV and i had planned on connecting my pc to the amp by using a digital coaxial cable i bought..i have a coaxial output on my motherboard...a "Gigabyte P35C-DS3R" and an input on my sony amp labled "Coax In DVD"

but upon connecting it up to my pc and playing various media forms..I only ever get 2.1 sound with the Left, Right and SubWoofer lights lighting up on the amp..now i know CD's dont output in 5.1 but i would have tought the dvd played from my drive would have outputted in 5.1..when i noticed this i did a bit of research and it seems that s/pdif's only have enough bandwidth for 2 channels or something unless some sort of encoding takes place im not sure...

so just wondering is it even possible to get 5.1 sound from your pc with digital coaxial..and if not is there anyway i can get it to? through use of different cables or a soundcard etc?

    thanks

I had installed Vista Codec Pack which includes AC3Filter. You can then configure AC3Filter to support 5.1 playback.

If you don't have Vista Codec Pack installed you can install AC3Filter on its own.

Additionally depending on the player you are using on the PC, you maybe able to configure it directly also to output 5.1.

That's what worked for me I am sure there is other options.

yeah i had a look at this option the other night..and with the help of this and mplayerc i managed to get 5.1 media to output through all speakers as true 5.1..so that was good..but sadly this doesnt make games output through 5.1 but i suppose its good enough..

    thanks for the heads up

To get games to output in 5.1 you need to change your sound settings and use the 3mm headphone type sound outputs on your motherboard.

    1. Connect the line outputs to your amp, they should be colour coded to help match them.
    2. Right click your Volume icon on your taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'
    3. Left click 'Speakers' and set as default.
    4. Click 'Configure' and set speaker type as 5.1 (follow steps to test speakers) and click apply.

I have tried many times to get my games running in 5.1 using SPDIF, and had no joy.
This way you get your movies in 5.1 as well as your games (but only the ones that use 5.1 surround!).

    Hope this helps.
    Nick
