DRA explain Galvin verdict

he Disputes Resolution Authority has finally revealed their reasons for halving Paul Galvin’s six-month ban.

The suspension, which was imposed after the Kerry captain famously knocked the notebook out of referee Paddy Russell’s hand in this year’s Munster championship opener against Clare, came to dominate the Kingdom’s summer. Following a series of appeals and counter appeals, Galvin succeeded in having the ban quashed by the DRA and he was given a reduced 12-week sanction that allowed him to play in the All-Ireland final.

Mystery surrounded the reasons for the decision, but the full text of the arbitration body’s findings have now appeared on its website. They believe that CCCC chairman Jimmy Dunne said that it was policy to ’double the minimum suspension’ for any offence related to interference with a match official.

The DRA say this was against natural justice and they ordered the Central Hearings Committee to hear the case again. This resulted in Galvin having his ban halved.

The statement reads: "Having heard evidence from three CCCC members this DRA Tribunal has accepted on the balance of probabilities that the CCC member, Mr Dunne, did say that CCCC had a policy of ’doubling the suspension’ for an infraction involving a match official."
