I spent about a month in KL. Stayed at a place called the Trekker Lodge. It's a hostel, but you can get comfy single rooms. Also near it are the Istana and the Radius hotels if you want real luxury. My Lodge provided free wireless, simple breakfast and a TV lounge in which I could meet other travellers.

It's near Bukit Bintang which is great for eating out/drinking/shopping. It's very near a 7 floor mall with nothing but tax free electronics. Got a fantastic camera that's €400 here for €250.

Just remember it's a Muslim country so alcohol is heavily taxed. They don't care if non-muslims drink though. China town is the place to go though for night markets and cheaper drink (and less frowning looks). It's about a 15 minute walk from the place I suggested.

If you walk in the other direction from the hotel for 10 or 15 minutes you'll get to what is called Kuala Lumpur City Centre. This is not your average city centre. It has embassies, offices and the like. Not a hub of activity at night. Has Petronas towers and KL Tower though. Really recommed going up KL Tower.
Also close to that area are the underground metro thing and monorail which will get you everywhere, including to the station where the airport bus leaves you off so no need for a taxi. Have fun, I loved KL.

Thanks very much for that Dory. So would you recommend staying near to Bukit Bintang then? Going there in March and plan on staying approximatley a week before heading up to islands so will prob want to be staying in a nice enough hotel but nothing crazy expensive and close to everything.

    Thanks again

Yea definitely. Despite there being a place called 'KL City Centre' there really is no centre, just a few hubs of activity. Bukit Bingtang was the coolest one I think. Lots of bars and outside cafes. Just remember, the tax on beer is nuts! In a club it's something like €7 a beer! Cheaper in China town as far as I remember.
Tioman island is tax free so it's €1/beer!
