I have a house I'm going to rent when I travel. Would you be able to get around backpacking on €16,500? Where could you go & what kind of life would you have?

Does the pope sh*t in the woods?

You could spend 6 month in Thailand / S.E. Asia and 6 months in Oz without working and come back with enough to live in Dublin comfortably for a couple of months while looking for a new job.

I travelled for a year in 2006, spent 3 months in SE Asia, 2 months in China, some time in Malaysia, Borneo, Singapore, then a couple of months travelling through Oz and NZ, then back to Asia... I stayed in nice guesthouses in some places, hotels in others. Did everything I wanted to do from learning to dive, to doing a skydive to going hiking .... bought and sold a van in Oz, and a car in NZ and spent a total of about 15,000 including flights!!! Didn't work a day either :)

It really depends on where you're going and how long you're spending in each place. If you're spending a year in Australia/New Zealand or Europe you'd be cutting it tight. Its doable but on a tight enough budget. If we're talking southeast Asia or South America - screw the budget and indulge yourself to your heart's content. A combination of the above and you'll get by comfortably.

Anyone else know? The Euro's not as strong now as it was, though?

I'm going for 6 months in February and I'm bringing 10K and I'm going to the exact places you are going.

In fact I'll be in NZ for two months in the ski season skiing. (Hope accommodation won't be tough to find!)

No you couldn't! Be careful not to let the OP off into the sunset with mad advice like that. It's irresponsible.

    6 months in Thailand = 26 weeks x 300 = 7,800

    6 months in Australia = 26 weeks x 400 = 10,400

    = 18,200

And that's without the 2 months in Dublin on returning that you have mentioned. Even if the 2 weekly amounts were reduced to 250 and 300 respectively, the total would still come to 14,300. And that's without any internal flights or 3 day treks you'd book on the way.

Some may think that the above amounts are generous but it's all well and good saying that one can live on pittance one week, but that's not possible every week. You have to factor in adventure sports, unforeseen illness, missing connecting flights/trains/buses etc. Also, if you're not working, then you have more time to kill and therefore will spend more money on activities.

Always budget for more than you think you'll need.

OP, the amount that you have mentioned would be more than enough if you wanted to go to places such as South America (pretty much all of it, Brazil is most expensive country), South East Asia, China, Africa, India etc.

However I wouldn't be so confident of that amount of money lasting me if I wanted to stay more than say a couple of months in any of the following: US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe.

But the places I mentioned such as South America, SE Asia have what are probably the most interesting countries in the world. They would definitely be my preferred destinations. (South America especially)

Go for it OP, you have calculated that it's possible, now put the plan into action and get ready to make some incredible memories.

That price includes flights and everything, if I wanted to get an RTW ticket would that still be enough?

I don't think you can say that your budget is correct and other posters is way off without knowing the type of trip they plan to take. Your spending depends hugely on how you like to travel. Taking local trasport and eating in non-tourist restaurants alone can make a huge difference in budget. I spent over 6 months in Asia and spent 3000 Euro. I travelled from Mongolia to Bali for that and I didn't miss out on anything I really wanted to do. I stayed in decent accomodation, ate well and enjoyed every minute. Of course you could spend multiples of this if you stick to tourist geared transport/accomodation/restaurants.
