Opening day of the season hits Morzine/Avoriaz. Lifts have opened this weekend with lifts running up in Avoriaz, over in Les Gets, and over in Chatel. Bluebird skies, cold temperatures, great early season snowfalls, mean it's another early opening for the region.

One of the most frustrating things about living in a place like this is seeing the perfect conditions up on the mountain, perfect weather, perfect snow, and not getting up there to take advantage... The number of cheesy grins seen round town this afternoon back up the reports I've had from people who have been up the mountain today. Stories of 2ft of fresh on the run back down to Morzine have been common place, with most people saying it's some of the best early season snow they've seen.

Currently there are lifts open in the Arare, Lindarets, and beginners plateu sections in Avoriaz, as well as on the Chavannes sector in Les Gets. Avoriaz even has La Chapelle snowpark up and running already!

Lifts in Avoriaz are closing again after tomorrow (Sunday 30th) but will be re-opening on Saturday 6th for the whole of the winter season.

Will update on conditions as soon as I can get up there!

Its going to be a great winter!

Some nice videos on Morzine from VANS

    http://www.goneboarding.co.uk/Videos/ShowChannel.aspx?UserID=5069

I've didn't have any plans for guiding until you mentioned it.. now it seems like a capital idea! We get a guide with the Chalet but I've no idea what he is like. Last year we did a lot of off piste stuff but that guide was a 5 year morzine vet and she left for NZ.

Are you going to do any yourself?

I'm starting to hear Helicopters calling me.. like Sirens in the night.. If I pay will they come?, if they come will I find Powder?, If I find Powder can I ever go back to regular slopes?.. these are the questions that keep me awake at night..

Yeah seen them a while back some pretty sweet runs.

Yeah hopefully we will get some powder while there and we are hoping to plan some guiding around that, but i dont know if thats going to work because they get booked up pretty quickly.
Chopper rides i think are about 250 Euro!

    Check this out

I prefer to use my built in GPS, I never seem to lose myself when im on the mountain.

Yeah Chopper rides are pricey but wouldn't it be class!.. what a way to start a season or the New Year!

How difficult is a chopper entry? and then the ski/snowboard down? not for the faint hearted? i ski and my brothers snowboard. all well able to handle any slope. havent done much off piste thou..

Hi Static, whilst you're out there already can you let us know what parks are open for the early season?

I'm on my way out there for NY also and hoping to shred the parks!!!!

    See ya on the slopes!;););)

@Nialo, you should really be able to ride powder and have some experiance with it before you took a chopper trip to make it worth while. Deep Powder is a very different riding style its all your back leg and you kinda have to bounce around a bit.. I did a fair few powder runs over the last four days and my back leg was burnt out by 1 OClock every day where as normally I could ride around all day without having any real issues.

    Quick Update on Morzine\Avoriaz

First off its been snowing ALOT over the last week, infact they reckon its snow so much that they already have a big enough base to last the season!
95% of the lifts are open, the ones that aren't are on the edges so the most people won't even see them. The whole mountain was covered in a about a foot of powder on Wednesday\Thursday and because the slopes were empty you could do powder runs all day without having to make the hike up to the Meadows or Satelite. Its all in very good shape.

For those going over New Years, you need to organise tickets for the New Years eve parties, Ive been told that the one in Dixies is good but its €20-50 per ticket. Again I dont know if it will be good or not so check it out yourselves. New Bar at the top of the Cavern\Budda\Coyote called "Le Crepu" which is very small but kinda nice. The Coyote bar has pool tables if you get bored in the evenings.

@2005keir. The baby park (Green, Blue) jumps is open and looks good, its also got some boxes and rails. The Super park is being built beside the half pipe and should be done by New Years week. I had a run in the half pipe which was good fun by a little scary! You need a helmet though. The stash is looking really well this year, they have added a couple of new features which are fun to play on for Beginneers to Advanced.#

I tried to get some pictures of the park but none of them did it justice! and the visability was really poor. Remember when you go into the Stash you have a couple of choices of runs that wind in and out of each other, every time you go down you can only hit certain features on that run. Even on the last day I found some rails and wall rides that I hadn't seen before.

I'll have a look though my camera and see if I can find anything decent to post up.

Hi Guys, I'm off to Morzine in the afternoon. Can anyone recommend a pub that shows Premiership footy, for the United / Chelsea game tomorrow afternoon? My priority is the snow, but my young fella is a united nutter...

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Static M.e.

Head towards the Coyote bar, you basically have four bars right beside each other at the top Le Crepe, Budda bar, Coyote and the Cavern. One of them will be showing the game.

If not try Dixies bar but thats further away from the other four

Thanks much! Will keep an eye out for them this evening.

All very good, except he's a skier :D

@Nialo, it's a whole different kettle of fish. Don't go near a chopper until you have plenty of experience in powder, it's a much harder transition to make on skis than on a board, but the amount of terrain that opens up for skiers is huge. There are a few places where you can do off-piste courses, but it does kinda depend on the weather - if there's been no snow for a while then there won't be any powder to practise in.

On Morzine, I'm heading over there in early February - never been before so hopefully I'll get some good snow.

Back from Morzine now. was there for new years week. Snow was amazing. had bad weather one day where the visibility was nil! apart from that everywhere was open, rained one day so icey slopes on the lower end coming into morzine itself. wasnt to impressed with avoriaz side of things, snow wasnt as good there or jst to chewed up. will definitely go back to the area. stayed away from any choppers for the moment. think i still need a bit more practice! :)

Didnt go out at all really, stayed in a chalet we rented so cant tell you what the night life was like.

cheers for all the advice and for anyone that goes enjoy.
