My one was a grand one... I guess. Had to get the screen replaced within the first year (warrantey covered that). Then nearing its 3rd year on the go it finally gave up. Suspected motherboard cracked.

Now i do take care of my laptop, and did the same for the acer, but after about 2 and half years of use nearly 7 days a week and being carried around in the back of a college school bag, I think it served me well.

Took it apart and sold it as spares then, screen, processor, ram, charger, heat sink. Got about €130 for just those.

I would certainly have no problems getting one in the future if it was the right spec and price for me.

No problems with mine. Nearly 2 years of constant abuse and everything still works. Only thing is the battery is kaput but I guess that happens with all makes.

    I have one over 2 years........perfect - not a bother.

A buddy of mine had an Acer laptop and advised me not to get one on the basis of the battery not lasting very long after being charged. Any other opinions on that?

Well I had mine for 2 and a half years, and the battery was giving me at least 2 hours last time I had the laptop going. Im happy with that.

Just offering it to Fuzzy clam if he's interested

The thing with batteries is that, their life after long periods will depend on how they were treated, a battery that was left in a laptop which was plugged in nonstop for years will most definitely
be dead in a couple of years, a battery that was properly stored and removed when plugged into the mains will last substatially longer. Generally it's not the batteries that are at fault, rather the conditions they were used uder for prolonged periods.

Did you just say that batterys last longer when their not used? :pac::pac:

I know you mean, taking out the battery when the mains are plugged in and the battery is not needing charging, but thats awful hard to come by.

Laptop is Aspire 3000. Battery is Li ion Model No. LIP-4084QUPC SY6 14.8v
I don't think I ever got much more than 1 hour out of it. I admit that I always had it plugged in. Its only recently that I've learnt that its not a good idea.:(

Ill have a look later on and see what one my one is.

From what I can see, mine is the same. Mines from an aspire 1690. Similar ones on Ebay seem to say the 1690 is also for the 3000 so you might be in luck.

What battery life are you getting out of it now?

I think the battery issue affects all laptops and not solely linked to Acer.

I have an Acer myself and have just ordered another one. I like them. I did get a 3 year warranty which I think is a good idea for laptops especially to cover screen problems after year one.

Edited my post to make it more clear. When not charging the battery and running on the mains, best practice would be to remove the battery and store in a cool dry place, like a drawer. As heat affects the longevity of a lith-ion battery

It will definitely improve the longevity of the battery if it is stored in a cool place (at roughly half charge) as opposed to left in the laptop at full charge. But not by a huge amount, unless you're laptop is running blazing hot, and/or your cool storage place is very cold.

Personally I would only bother removing the battery from a laptop when it is not being used for an extended period (holidays or weekends etc). Im not saying anyone else should or shouldn't, just that personally I don't bother :pac:

If you remove the battery from a laptop that is being used (on mains) you run the risk of data loss if a cord is yanked out (happens easily enough) and you'll also thus need to disable write-caching/advanced performance on the HDD, taking a performance hit with it.

Not to mention that some laptops throttle back when the battery is out anyway, check the recent Macbooks to see complaints about this.

Also, if you are going to be removing the battery and storing it somewhere cool, you'll need to discharge it to about half-way (40% ideally) to get maximum benefits (in longevity). Which is a hassle for most people, first of all you've got to discharge it, and then, what if you need the laptop (on battery power) at short notice, you're taking a half-depleted battery with you..

Its just a hassle for most people. It will undoubtably improve battery longevity, but personally I dont bother, with the exception of the extended periods as mentioned. Also, the battery of my current laptop is part of the chassis base, its got one of the rubber feet on it :pac: so all the above is irrelevant, im not going to be doing it anyway :pac:

I owned an Acer once and it wasnt 100%, the charging circuit died after about a year. Build quality on the trackpad wasnt great either, it was a bit flimsy. It was alright, but I wouldn't buy another similar model.

    Ok, thanks for that.

I'm getting zero life now. In fact I have to have it removed from the laptop, otherwise it won't boot up properly.

Having a lot of trouble with mine (5103). I've had to get the European Consumer Commission involved to try and get a full refund from Laptopsdirect. Never again!

All ive heard about laptops-direct is that they are SHODDY SHODDY SHODDY! Tight wallets on them and quite reluctant to do any aftersales work.

    Hi all,

In the market for a laptop and was nearly decided on the ACER 5920G 15.4 inch laptop with the blu-ray drive (to give maximum flexibility in the future).

I'm now confused as to whether it is a good deal - what do you think?

Voodoo child why does the battery have to be at half charge to get the most out of taking it out? I've been charging up the laptop and then popping the battery out when its full for the last while, what's the difference?
Oh and in response to the op I have an acer. Was a bit wary of getting one cause my sister has one that's three or four years old and it felt really flimsy but mine (aspire 5920) is pretty solid imo, although I've only had it about three months, so don't know about longevity.

Its just a property of lithium-ion batteries; if they're stored at approx 40% charge, the lifespan is significantly increased compared to 100%.

So if you're going to be going out of your way and removing the battery as much as possible to increase lifespan, you may as well get it right (ie both temp and charge) as opposed to just one or the other.
