Ok, after a horror buy of a Macbook I decided to seek the advice of people who know what they are on about when it comes to laptops.

Im pretty clueless as to what brands are good and who arent etc. I know what specs I want but I dont know what brand to chose.

Can anyone recomend a good laptop for €800 that is portable enough, good battery life, atleast 2ghz processor speed, 2gb ram, wireless lan, decent size hard drive and bluetooth.

basicly a good all round laptop.

(also sorry if my enquiery sounds like a mess :p)

    Hi there,

I recently purchased the Samsung Q210 last week and I couldnt be happer. It's my

First laptop was a dell, had a few problems such as the keys' on the keyboard easily getting detached and a bit of wear and tear.

I then purchased a Song Vaio last April, BIG mistake. I didnt expect to have to get a new latop 1.5 years later but the Vaio's battery went completly so essentially it works just as a Desktop computer (has to be plugged in). Whats worse is that none of the 2 USB ports work at all anymore (and this is a hardware issue, I have tried endlessy to get this fixed and I have a Bachelors degree in computers, I know my stuff)

The Samsung Q210 has 3 GB RAM and a 320GB harddrive which is great for a laptop. Whats more is your have a choice of 2 Dual Core CPU's from the same model and it comes with all the other extra's such as built in camera, bluetooth etc. The computer looks the business too and so far I am really impressed. Elara are great to deal with to, you can collect your order from Parkwest and they have a helpfull Boards.ie poster. I paid €757 for mine and thats not bad considering "The Laptop Shop" in Dundrum are charging a massive €999 for it! (it could even be €1099 they charge but that might be the Q310). Argos charge €899 for the Q210 so your best bet is to go with Elara. Do drop into the laptop shop in Dundrum and have a look though.

I had a similar problem before on a laptop and it was windows driver related. It only resolved when I put on a second windows O/S from fresh - the original never worked no matter what. Interestingly, if I plugged in aUSB hub in the original O/S - that would work.

I didn't think they taught anything in BSc.computing about usb either :)

    What's wrong with the Macbook?

I'd add. If you're not going down the Apple route again I'd stick with a Dell machine. Dell have good hardware and customer service. I've always been well taken care of.

Believe me, it is hardware related, if i press down hard on the laptop above the USB port it works at times. And they do teach you quiet a bit about computer hardware and components too in a degree would you believe.
