Hello. Have a few days off at the end of January, would love to see some snow.

I can't afford a ski holiday, wouldn't want to go on one anyway alone. Just want some little place where I can walk in some snow. I would really like to go to Carcassonne in France, regardless of weather. Anyone been? Doesn't seem to be any hostels there which is handy for someone going alone.

    Any suggestion welcome. Cheers.

ryanair to salzburg and get the train about 1-1.5hrs west to zell am see (will be expensive though that time of year as its a skiing town)

ryanair do tampere in finland as well (not a skiing town) i was there in february a few years back and there was alot of snow

Fly to Krakow and have a weekend there. Lovely city, great nightlife, and it's cheap. (Auschwitz if you're into history and the Salt Mines are amazing; 1.5 hours and 20 mins from Krakow respectively)

Then bus down to Zakopane which is a ski resort in southern Poland. Walk up to this beautiful lake in the snow.

    It's called Morskie Oko

Obviously it will be frozen and the mountains covered in snow

Google : Carcassonne "Auberges de jeunesse" and you'll get some options.

Was in Carcassonne during the summer with the missus for a long weekend. Lovely place although it poured rain on us for the few days we were there. The castle is simply fabulous and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It's a bit touristy in parts with a pletora of cafes and trinket shops but the main Castle and its walls have been restored beautifully and is an amazing sight at night time when its lit up. Well worth spending a day walking around it and I can only imagine what it will look like in the snow. The city it's self is also very nice with lots of narrow old streets to wonder up and down and plenty of places to eat. You can hire a boat and take a tour of the canals, museams etc. Not sure whats its like off season but we both loved it.

We stayed in the Ibis Hotel in the city centre btw (there are two, other is on the outskirts) which is a 20 minute walk from the Castle.
