Classic insurance

    Hey folks,

Planning to buy a 1974 Mercedes 230.4 w115 but I'm not sure what the story is with insurance.

    I have several questions:

    1. I will be 25 in June, so is there any insurance company that will insure me on a classic policy now, or will I have to wait until June?
    2. It is not currently NCT'd/MOT'd or anything, it's coming out of storage. Will the insurance company require a mechanics report?
    3. I currently have a company car - will they consider this as my "daily driver" when looking for a classic motor policy? I do about 60000 kms/year in my company car and the merc will only be for summer/show and occasional weekend use. I currently have a private motor policy too on my weekend car at the moment, an e30, but I'd like to cancel it. I have 3 years NCB on this.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

last classic insurance i had was with axa
once you had another car insured as a "first" car there was no problem
no nct, engineers report or club membership required
but that was two years ago
im not sure if things have changed
won't cost anything to give them a try
    best of luck!;)

    Hi,

    I had a '72 W115 car.
Not sure but most likely you will have to wait.

Most likely you will not require a report but it can vary depending on insurer. If you have a low mileage policy you probably won't.

I am with First Ireland. You can use a classic as a daily driver, with limited mileage to make it cheaper, but they will insist on an engineers report.

    Thanks for the replies.

So you think axa may accept my company car as my "daily driver" and then the classic as a weekend car? I don't mind waiting until June.

Also, how much on average is classic insurance?

I'm not sure about the company car. My point is that if your classic is in good nick you could put it as your daily car instead, via First Ireland.

I am paying 345 for fully comp for a 6000mile 2nd car policy on my Alfa.
When I had the Merc as my daily driver I had it set at 10,000 miles and it cost me about 600.

I guess I need to shop around. Being 25 is the big problem!
    Thanks again.

You're a legend! Quote of 288 fully comp.

For anyone who is interested - they will quote anyone who has a full license for 5 years.
