    Hi there,
I want to open up a surf shop, I have the land, suppliers and the some money, however I cant afford to build, I have been looking at cabins and containers, what I want to know is are you allowed run a retail shop from a container or cabin and what facilities does the building require? Does it also require planning permission?

My answer would be your allowed to do what you want until someone tries to stop you!

Dont really see why not, but you still will have to have insurance and the likes. Where you located? Is there no empty units you can rent instead near you?

    tramore.
    no suitable units available yet.
    however they may come up.
in mean time i have some contacts with land near seaside and I want to see if they will rent the land so i can put a large cabin/container down on it, obviously as I will be retailing from it the container wud be done up it wudnt be an eye sore.

Ye better off with a shop, but container is best bet for security. But not much space really. How will you cope? Isnt there another surf shop down there?

    +1

make sure you have that baby bomb proof at night or you may get a nasty shock some morning when you go to open up.

    best of luck with it.

yeah agreed with making it bomb proof, lol.

Any idea yet on planning permission and what regulations have to be abided by? Toilet? Two doors as opposed to just an entrance? etc etc

You will need planning permission and they will not give it to you.
    Ring the council to verify.

Dont a bit more research, will have to go for a prefabricated modular building.... Cost effective, attractive and perfect for job... Bit more pricier than a container though.

Not as easy to secure tho' than a 20ft/40ft steel container. Have you considered a converted steel container? - one that has been converted into office or canteen accomadation on a building site. Still have the security of a steel container and the feel of a prefab.

I think the OP may have run into the usual council bs and has been "informed" that a prefab is best. I agree with you though that a converted steel container is an excellent alternative.

if you go for a prefab then have a look for a second hand one from a school or somethin. A lot of old schools got new buildings before the recession hit and they need to get rid of them or else they get wrecked by the local young lads =p

i hope its not against the rules for me to say this but since there is no gain for me in it i might as well.....

My dad is a teacher and he's getting a new school and tryin to get rid of a prefab so send me a pm if you want his contact details =)
only thing is you'll pay a lot to get it moved but i'd say it's the same story with a container....
